I created this piece of artwork to encapsulate the very depths of what's inside my heart, but also to accompany this original composition of mine: www.youtube.com/watch?v=mE57Nk…

There is a story behind my love of periwinkles (also known as vincas.) When I was around 8 or 9 years old, I encountered them for the first time, peeking out at me from the edge of a ditch overshadowed by a fence and some pine trees. I was intrigued, never having seen anything like them before, and I came to think of them as miraculous, as they brightened my day from then on, and yet, I hadn't seen them in any other places! I was always very hopeful that I would find some more, but I didn't know what they were called, thus had no idea where to look for them! I started searching for them on the edges of people's gardens whenever I was walking home from school, and came to understand that they covered the ground in shady, well-drained places; I managed to spot two more patches along that street once I narrowed my search in this way. Only a few years later, I happened to spot someone's artwork of these little guys, and from the title of that painting, I learned what they were called! From then on, I was able to browse for pictures of them on the internet whenever I wanted to see some.

Even though I now understand that periwinkles are a relatively common flower, in my heart, they will always feel the same as they were in my childhood. My mind is haunted by veils of blue and purple stars winking at me from shady carpets of emerald. They remain the elusive, mysterious blossoms that I happened upon one fateful day when walking alone in my childhood town- and, as I write this, I'm aware that, somewhere deep inside of me, I'm still standing on that empty, forested avenue on a mild spring afternoon, searching for periwinkles.
