I used to read the Magnus, Robot Fighter comics back in the '60's, when I was a kid. They were cool and imaginative, and sparked a nascent iterest in science fiction. Magnus was very fast and incredibly tough; he could out-fight a robot--or a group of them--with just his bare hands and superior reflexes. Which was fortunate: for some reason robots were a constant, annoying threat in the world of the future. They also would fly apart from just one of his punches, demonstrating the shoddy assembly standards of those years to come. I think your average toaster of today is more solidly built.

Somehow, in most comics humans seem to be much more durable than things like robots, machinery, concrete--even if they don't have any actual superpowers.
