I really like the background you added. It gives the portrait so much more depth.
Also, mind me asking how he got his scar? I've always been curious of that.

He got his scar(s) in a battle. He abandoned his country and joined the other side of a war for the noble cause. An othersider soldier that hated him was easily persuaded (by a spy from his own country) into a plot to kill Martin. He jumped him, struggled with a knife, sliced Martin's face, Martin kills him(not part of the plan), then the rest of the regiment stumbled upon the scene, shot him twice, and the spy made sure he was very dead.
