Description

I wanted to do something a bit different from the military/security style mech dogs I've done previously. I sort of see this guy as a premium consumer product, to be used in racing as well as just an everyday fashion statement. I really struggled with getting the legs in the distance to not mess with the 'readability' of the design, I ended up lowering the opacity so that you could just about make out the outline of the legs that are closest to the foreground.

In case you were wondering, levriero is Italian for greyhound.

I like the chrome bits. You know, it sort of reminds me of one of those high end iPad stands or something. I mean, just in theme.
I notice that it has some sort of chrome ports on the side of its middle, is that by chance exhaust for an engine? You mentioned its movement is hydraulically driven (comments below), powering the hydros with an internal combustion engine would be neat, and is something I personally have taken interest in.
I am not an artist, so I can't really offer you any criticism, just that I like the idea of this guy being a luxury item. I almost expect it to have an Acura badge on it.

Yeah I just wanted to explore future robotics without the military wrapper that most mech designs come packaged in nowadays. I'd love to say as a petrolhead that the exhausts are for an ICE but realistically I'd imagine it'd use some sort of reactor, maybe a hydrogen fuel cell, and the vents are for the release of harmless byproducts (no this isn't a VW!). Thanks for your interest in this!

I see, still very cool. You could have some of the best of both worlds with a hydrogen ICE.
Haha, oh poor VW. I almost feel bad for them.
Thank you for posting it, a friend said I would like it, and wouldn't you know it, she was right!

SLICK! Love the visuals - again, very automotive.

My main crit would be that it's unclear how it moves, there are no joints really and a lot of the links either limit range of motion or won't allow the limb to move at all, making it look more like a statue than something that is meant to move.

It does have a premium look though!

Really awesome of you to take the time to crit, thanks! I gotta admit that I was overstretching myself so much with the rendering that I kinda let the functional design take a backseat. I had a rough idea that the chrome bits could move in/out of cavities in the matt grey parts, with some hidden hydraulics, but you're right it'd need a lot of reworking. If I handed this down the line to a 3D modeler/animator I'd probably get assaulted lol

No probs! And the rendering itself reads well, you could easily translate to 3D, but the animation would be trickier :'D

One thing you could maybe do is have a black exoskeleton, just a really simple structure that is the basis for the arms, legs, a form of mechanical "backbone" while the spaceframe-style thing you've got going on is like a structural "frame-skin" that can also be an extension of the moving parts, as well as be mounting points for other gear and even to just indicate what a surface shape might be if this thing was actually fully covered. Either way I love the idea behind the aesthetic, not everything has to be blocky/solid/armored in the mecha world.

Whoa thanks for the ideas, I'm definitely gonna have to revisit this guy at some point and apply them. I love the frame skin concept, opens up a lot of doors regarding modularity and personalisation. And the idea of fully covering the chassis is making me think of something like a four-legged BMW Gina, freaking cool! Oh and I'm really glad you like the idea/aesthetic, thanks!

A Gina bot! That could be so rad.

When I think of mechas with "skins" I think of this guy right away crazyasian1.deviantart.com since he uses fabric as a main material for his bots, it's a really clever idea. But he more automotive direction like you mentioned would be a neat thing!

Looking forward to what you do with this!

Wowza! I see what you mean about his use of fabric, very cool stuff.

I'll try not to disappoint!
