This was the third morning in a row that Link found himself bent over a bucket in the corner of his room, puking his guts out. Link groaned, leaning back against the wall and silently praying to the goddesses for this to end.
Then, there was a knock at the door but before Link could answer he was throwing up again.
“Link, are you okay in there?” he heard the voice of his wife, Princess Ruto of the Zoras, call from the other side of the door.
“Not really,” Link called back just before throwing up yet again.
Without another word his wife burst through the door and ran to his side. “Oh Link,” she cried, gently caressing his cheek, “What’s wrong? Are you still ill?”
“I…” Link began but was cut off as he threw up again.
“I’ll go call for a healer,” she said, “I’ll be right back.” Ruto dashed back out the door and only a few minutes later returned and was back at Link’s side, gently rubbing his back as he vomited more.
Link was so utterly miserable that he began to cry, sobbing as Ruto held him gently in her embrace.
“Link,” Ruto said softly, “Remind me, how long had this been doing on?”
“Three days,” he groaned.
Ruto nodded and gently caressing his cheek and stroking his hair.
“Link, do you think you’re done throwing up for now?”
“Yeah, I think so,” he replied.
“Then let’s get you into bed,” she said, gently pulling his to a standing position and guiding him to his bed before tucking him in.
Link was beginning to wonder why she was being so gentle with him. She normally wasn’t, but then, he thought, maybe it was because he was sick.
The Zora healer arrived a short while later and immediately began examining Link from head to toe. She asked all kinds of questions about his appetite, if he’d had any cravings or mood swings, and if there was a particular time of day his throwing up occurred.
Link really didn’t understand what the point of it all was since he assumed that all they needed to do was give him some medicine to ease his stomach but he went along with it, figuring the healer knew better than he did.
Finally the healer stood up and said, “I’m almost certain I know the cause of this ‘illness,’ but I think the princess knew before I even got here. Am I correct?”
“Yes,” Ruto replied.
“Well then, do you want to tell the boy or should I?”
Link glanced between Ruto and the healer, confused and waiting for someone to give him an explanation.
“I will tell him,” Ruto replied, “You may go now.”
The healer nodded and said, “Make sure he gets some rest.”
“I will.”
Then the healer bowed to both of them and left.
From where Link still lay in bed he turned to look at Ruto expectantly as he said, “So… you know what’s making me sick?”
“That’s just it Link. You aren’t sick,” she said with a smile on her face.
“What do you mean?” he asked, more confused now than ever.
“I’m surprised you haven’t figured it out yourself Link. I mean the morning sickness, your appetite, and being so emotional. What does that sound like to you?”
“Well it sounds like… like…” Link trailed off, unable to wrap his mind around where this was headed.
“Do you get it now?”
“I… but that’s not possible. I’m not… I mean, I can’t be…” Link trailed off again, unable to say the words out loud.
“But Link you are. You’re pregnant.”
