Description First art piece of the year 2010! Wohoo! And also the very first Scanner Rape! ...someone do something to that scanner, it is all mad, ruides all the colours. For example the wat-- er, blood looks horrible. I looks I haven't done any shading on it! What I've done to deserve this? u__u
Anywho, this is my entry for 's contest unless I'm late. Yay, good thing that I didn't make any promises, I would propably done something to this "always late from contest deadlines"-thing. Well, lets just hope that Kalamu uses dA clock in this deadline and that she didn't mean the entries to be submitted before this day. I asked this but didn't get a reply.
If I didn't make it in time let this piece just be a fanart for the awesome Kalamu, she's great with art!

The theme of the contest was to draw Kalamu's character(s) and I picked Kalamu. Ihaven't drawn a gryphon since... few years ago? o__ó Gryphons are wonderful things to draw, I enjoy drawing them. Since Kalamu likes blood and walking on a beach I decided to draw Kalamu talkin a stroll on Bloody Shores. Ahaha, aren't I just creative?
I wanted to draw something a bit different this time. I usually draw the whole character, sometimes I do headshots and such but I don't do this kind of pictures where parts of the character are left outside the paper. I also tried something new with the angle. Hm, could've been better. But tell me, why do I ALWAYS experiment something new when I draw my contest entries? Why the heck is that? I also tried a completely new media combination this time - acrylics and coloured pencils. Of course I've somethimes added highlights with acrylics to a coloured pencil drawing but this one is half painted with acrylics and half coloured with coloured pencils. It was nice and pretty quick, too! And I like the outcome, I'm pretty pleased since this is my first yet not the last experiment with these mediums.

You won't faint if I left this without a filter, right? It is just a lake of blood, you can take it, right?

Well, that is all I have to say. Hopefully your year has started well, mine did. (It was horrible difficult to change the year in tehe signature! 2010 isn't the best number to write in my singing style...)
Hope you like this picture, especially Kalamu!

Mediums Acrylics | Faber Castell Polychromos colour pencils

This looks AWESOME, Shade, I'm sure you'll place I love the angle, it really makes the picture stand out, and that sky is just amazing! The wat- blood looks fine too, better than I could draw it Best of luck, but I'm sure you'll do fine. Experimenting is good! I should do it more often...

I didn't place but I did get a little price anyway.
Experimenting is really fun, you should totally try it out! Even the craziest ideas might work.

Well, hello there Moses!

I’m not lying when I say that this is bloody amazing! Haha, but really. This is some damn fine work. There are so many great things about this picture. I’ll just gather myself and then I’ll give you a list.

The anatomy. I struggle with Kalamu’s anatomy myself sometime. It can be hard to grasp as she’s not really based on any land living mammal, but more a mix of who knows what creatures. I generally say she’s a mix of cheetah and bird and let people interpret that as they wish; I’ve seen many interesting and creative results from that. Your take is one of the more “anatomically correct” versions of her. I especially like how you did the legs and shoulders. The straight line formed by the back and tail is also pretty spot on, and not just an interesting element composition-wise.

The colouring is also great. This is actually the second or third picture with Kalamu by some kind of blood coloured body of water. It must be something in the air, hurr. I especially like the highlighting on her body. I think the lightening is something of the things that really pull this picture together.

And of course, pretty fucking rad cropping going on here! Jesus, I just love the perspective and the way the face is not the focal point, but more of a help in leading the eye around the picture, if you know what I mean.

Thank you so much for entering in the contest!

This sorta reminds me of my sister's planet on my Spore game. All her water is red xD

It does? I've never played Spore but I've heard it is a great game. I didn't know you can create red water in it!

It is fun ^^

You can't make the water red on your planet. You just pick the planet you want to start with. ^^
