Koh sighed, closing his eyes. Everything was peaceful, for now. Foals were playing, pregnant mares were snoozing, and his right hand stallion and gelding were keeping an eye on things.
His herd had grown so big, so quickly. He thought back to the days of when it was just him and Kei, the cold winter nights of her bundled close to him. So much had changed.
A soft squeal from Photine and Lesedi caught his attention, and he opened his eyes. They were staring down at something in the grass, so Koh made his way over, curious what the two fillies were up to.
He stepped up to them and looked down, and to his surprise, a little creature sat staring up at them. He hadn't seen anything quiet like it before, it was a soft brown-ish tan, it had a white belly, and a very long tail, with small ears.
"Daddy, Daddy, what is it?" Photine asked, bumping into his side.
"Well, how about we ask him?" Koh leaned his head down, and spoke quietly, "Hello, my name is Koh."
The little creature's ears perked, "Oh! Koh? I am Noor!"
"Nice to meet you Noor, what, uh, are you exactly?"
Noor tipped his head, "I'm a kangaroo rat! I hop around, see?" He bounced in a circle, making the fillies giggle and jump and buck.
"Oh, I've never heard of a kangaroo rat! You're very unique."
"You are too!" Noor pointed at him.
Koh chuckled and glanced over at Lesedi, who was leaning down too to hear the little kangaroo rat.
"Hey, I have an idea, will you turn this way?" Noor asked, hoping closer.
Koh nodded and turned to look at Noor. Suddenly, feet were on his skull, and he felt Noor travel up his neck to sit on his back, grasping the hair at his withers, "Aha! I'm like a two-leg!" The little creature laughed.
Koh chuckled and turned his head to see Noor, who was already snuggling up into his mane. Koh took a few steps, and Noor hung on tightly. He laughed.
"I like you, Koh, do you mind if I travel with your herd?" Noor asked, skittering up near his ears, sitting between them.
"I don't mind at all."
"Koh!" He and Noor jumped at the loud voice. Inina.
Koh turned to face her, "What?"
"What the hell is on your head!"
"This, is Noor," Koh smiled.
"Are you really going to let some rodent on your head?"
Koh felt Noor puff up and huff, "I am not just 'some rodent'!"
Inina stepped up to them, and Koh felt a bit intimidated by the loud mare, "I like him, Inina."
"You're not going to let him ride around on you, are you?"
Koh shrugged, "I like him, and so do the girls," He smiled at the two fillies who were still giggling. Noor scampered back down his neck and held onto his mane again.
Inina rolled her eyes, "Are you going to let him stay there?"
"I might, do you have a problem with that?" Koh asked, flicking his tail, annoyed.
Inina eyed him, but stomped away, her tail swishing back and forth. He chuckled and glanced back at Noor, "You're welcome to stay."
"Oh thank you, Koh!"
