It's basically the same thing as when a character in a cartoon is writing a mathematical equation on the board, and whoever made the cartoon tries to make sure that the math is right. You don't need to know the math if you're watching the cartoon -- all you need to know is that mathematical equations are involved and that they look complicated. But it's always cool to me when the cartoonist tries to make it make sense!
So for ritual magic, I invented a few rules for how it works, so that the rituals wouldn't COMPLETELY be random shapes and lines -- but then I forgot to double-check my notes before drawing out Quentin's ritual the first time. xD So the triangles DO affect the way the ritual would theoretically work, but it doesn't actually matter for the story. :")
