It was early in the morning, when Summer crawled out of her tent. Everyday when the sun rose, the air in the tents got hot
and sticky and the girl woke up very early. She couldn't sleep anymore, so she decided to go for a stroll around the camp and
to visit her horse Blueberry in the paddocks. Still a little bit tired and stiff, she got up, stretched her limbs and searched for a
bucket to bring her beloved mare some breakfast. Because she'd set up her tent next to Jana's a little ways away from the center
of the camp, she didn't hear the loud shouting and excitement coming from there. Now, slowly embling to the horses' place,
she could hear it. But she was still too tired to ask herself what it should portent. It seemed to her that Sheriff Ellis was no
morning person - almost every day they got waked by his excited shouting.
"Blue, dear.", she said with a calm voice to the mare, who already noticed her owner arrive and welcomed her with a little
nicker. "Slept well? Here, I've got something for you." Now the rattling feed bucket in Summer's hand was Blue's main focus of
attention. The girl put it down on the floor and sat down, watching her horse munching.
The excited shouts from the middle of the camp still continued and Summer craned her neck to see what was going on. More
and more riders were coming from their tents, some grumbled because of the early time and berating the Sheriff's everyday
tantrums. "You don't know what happened, do you?", the girl asked Blue. The horse snorted, then continued to eat. "I know.
Enjoy your breakfast, then. I wonder what today's task will be - I found it very difficult yesterday. Might be the reason that I'm
no cowgirl at all..." She laughed a little. Some loud calls caught her attention. Something was arriving, she noticed. But... what
was it? A single horse? No... there was a rider...
Summer suddenly sat up, her eyes wide in shock. It was the Lieutenant! As far as she could tell from the distance, he was not
moving, half-pulled, half-carried onto a stretcher. And there was blood. Much. He'd been shot.
Summer's stomach lurched and she had to keep herself from jumping up. How could this happen? What was she supposed to
do now?
Blue had stopped her breakfast.
