Description 1. Night Life

Writers: Dominic Bisignano, Bryan Caselli, Tyler Chen, Gina Gress, Aaron Hammersley, Amy Higgins, John Infantino, Daron Nefcy, Sarah Oleksyk

Director: Tyler Chen

Date: November 16, 2017

Synopsis: “Star learns that Marco and Hekapoo have been dealing with rogue interdimensional portals.”

Well, things are definitely becoming more tense, as can be shown with the next few episodes, starting here. This episode starts with Marco (in his adult form from Running With Scissors) and Hekapoo going around and closing rogue inter dimensional portals. Star forbids him from going on these adventures since she needs him to be there for him, but Marco is too pumped up by adrenaline to stop adventuring. Marco tries to balance being there for Star and Hekapoo, but it’s too much, especially with the revelation that Star’s Mewberty form is responsible for the portals popping up. This episode skillfully deals with its themes on trust and reliability. On Marco’s side, he would naturally be the one who can’t resist the urge to go for excitement however he can, yet he also has the good intentions to actually want to make a contribution. On Star’s end, no matter how he wants to help, he’s not fulfilling his role as a Squire. With Hekapoo, she knows how great he is in the field, yet is dumbfounded by hiding Star’s dilemma from her. Everything essentially boils down to a little message: “Be willing to make sacrifices for others.”. Marco has to stop being Hekapoo’s partner in order to keep Star’s secret a secret, and he’s willing to give it up to help Star out. That’s nice.

Synopsis: “Star's sleep-portaling becomes a danger, and she decides to put a stop to it.”

Well, I thought “Sweet Dreams” was weird, but this is really stretching it. Let’s see why. This episode has Star assembling Marco and Janna in her bedroom to bring them up to speed in regards her sleep-portaling. Recently, she has started hearing a high-pitched wailing sound and tried to follow it to its source in her dreams, but she always wakes up before finding out what it is. She asks Janna to put her under hypnosis to help her out, but Star ends up in the Magic Realm from the season premiere when she falls asleep in her Mewerty form. I find this episode to be an interesting counterpart to its partner episode, mainly for its similar theming about trust and reliability. At one point, Star goes so far that the connection they established with the mirror is lost. The only way to reach her is with her wand, which helps restore her memories, a strategy thought up by Marco. The episode has a great showcase on how it’s sometimes necessary to be risky. It’s just about knowing when. Also, the world building is quite spectacular.

Synopsis: “All the youth of Mewni gather at the ancient Monster Temple to celebrate a new era of Monsters and Mewmans living together in peace, until guests start disappearing!”

Wow! I mean wow! I thought “Bon Bon The Birthday Clown” was an epic mid season finale, but this takes the cake! Let me elaborate. This episode involves Star throwing a party at the Monster Temple in order to bring Mewmans and monsters together. Things start off a bit shaky, and do get better, but then things become worse when monsters start getting kidnapped. To make matters worse, Miss Heinous is also after Star and Marco for showing her up, while it’s discovered that Mina kidnapped the monsters since she believes that they’re all evil and must be seen as lower creatures. Well, talk about a depressing episode. It just has shocking revelation after shocking revelation, like with Miss Heinous being an ancestor for the Butterfly family, and that Mina is incredibly bent on maintaining the current order of monsters and Mewmans. What I do like about this is how realistic it all is. At the end of the day, Star’s efforts failed when the authorities came in, and the monsters get arrested, while the rebellious Mewmans don’t. It just goes to show that you can’t clean the slate away between two species at war overnight. What helps the realism work is that Star is completely altruistic and not reckless, just very naïve. All I can say is that I can’t wait for what comes next.

4. Stump Day

Writers: Dominic Bisignano, Bryan Caselli, Tyler Chen, Gina Gress, Aaron Hammersley, Amy Higgins, John Infantino, Daron Nefcy, Sarah Oleksyk

Director: Tyler Chen

Date: December 2, 2017

Synopsis: “Star celebrates Stump Day.”

Holiday episodes help bring out a show’s uniqueness, and this proves it well. This episode involves the celebration of Stump Day, a holiday celebrating how the titular stump saved some explorers from freezing to death with warmth. It turns out that Star’s birthday is on that holiday, and is not happy with the celebration since she thinks it should honor only the stump. Her friends start arguing when they see she’s upset, along with thinking he’s not real, causing the titular stump to appear for real and go after them. This episode involves the idea of what makes holiday traditions work. Star, being one to stick to her guns, would naturally be opposed to celebrating two birthdays in one day due to her pride for her home. On the flip side, there is a genuine intention to make her happy, even within the arguing. It also helps that a lack of communication was the cause for what happened, which is believable given that it’s hard to know everything about a culture. It goes for the usual “love conquers all” moral, but it works given that everyone puts aside their animosity to stand up for each other, which is nice.

5. Holiday Spellical

Writers: Dominic Bisignano, Bryan Caselli, Casey Crowe, Aaron Hammersley, Amy Higgins, John Infantino, Charlotte Jackson, Daron Nefcy

Director: Brett Varon

Date: December 2, 2017

Synopsis: “Spider with a Top Hat invites one of Eclipsa's dark spells to the office holiday party.”

They say “honesty is the best policy”, but this episode puts an interesting spin on it. Let’s elaborate. This episode takes place in Star’s wand, where Spider With A Top Hat is holding a Stump Day party. He invites the All Seeing Eye, one of Eclipsa’s spells, to join them for the festivities. Seeing Eye starts revealing everyone’s secrets to each other, which causes them to get mad at him, especially spider. The episode is a brilliant deconstruction on the concept of brutal honesty. I'm not sure why no one came up with this sooner. It's genius. The reason it works is because Seeing Eye actually doesn’t mean any harm. It's just stubbornness and insensitivity that makes things difficult, not to mention looking at things from only one perspective. It's because of this perfect setup that the embarrassing moments manage to be both funny and hurtful in the right way, while also raising some interesting points. The moral itself is quite interesting. It delivers an obvious, but well done message on knowing how to be honest, which is acknowledging both good and bad points. This is a pleasant surprise.
