EDITS: oh wow, edits on such an old piece? I've edited part of his backstory + updated his relationships + added it on Instagram + enabled free download. (I think it need a watermark though)

Hello, my darling.

Your featured song this fine day shall be April by Kashiwa Daisuke. (classical music ... tells you a whole story without a single word ... I thought it was dead; Daisuke certainly proves me wrong ) www.youtube.com/watch?v=feShpP…

Instagram: www.instagram.com/p/BlBP-H_HXK… (but I'll probably update it soon)

Yay, it's done. I have a bunch of art trades (well ... really only 2, but that feels like a lot for someone with a tight schedule ;v; ) ahead of me, so I made up my mind to finish it.

This is actually the first real drawing I made of Basil, but I had wanted to finish it second, as just posting a portrait is, in my opinion, not a good way to introduce you to a character. ^w^;
This drawing hopefully clears up the confusing design of his "mohawk" and also gives a better image to the shape of his features and hair.

It feels like forever since I have done a portrait draw, so I'm glad to be back in practise.

Physical Appearance: -

Personality
:

Exteriorly, Basilico will seem a kindhearted, relaxed though very sarcastic and somewhat flippant youth. Can indeed seem emotional; however, is is also very even keeled and in control of his feelings, rarely becoming angry or frustrated. Thus, he is a charismatic individual. Though Basil is very relaxed, he is also a hard worker, believing in the value of earning every good thing in life by your own hand (thus, he and Be don't get along too well). However, all of this is merely one side to him. This youth is very vengeful, and though he hates this aspect of his personality and tries very hard to hide it, it can be seen by those who are a good judge of character. His temper is not explosive, but insidious, therefore he is very frightening when he has been angered. On a very rare occasion, his mind will shut down if he has been overwhelmed, grieving or otherwise keeping his emotions bottled up for long periods of time; then incapable of feeling anything but a dry and dangerous anger, though to him it seems as if he is feeling nothing at all. In this state, he usually not even aware of himself or his actions. Though he can change moods quickly, others do not usually notice it, and oftentimes neither does he; that he is unaware and unable to control himself during these times leads him to self-loathing, extreme fear of himself, and depression beneath his happy demeanor. Can become deeply attached to others, whom he regards as his family, and is terrified he may hurt them. Though he has many friends and is generally extroverted, Basil is sometimes considered eccentric because of his obsession with Italian history, mainly ancient Rome, and with cooking.

History:Please do correct me if I have made a |historical based| mistake, as admittedly, WW2 is not my area of expertise.

Luciano was born in 1927 to the Adessi family, in a small town on the southern coast of Calabria, Italy. The Adessis, being very poor, made their living in meager ways and lived very frugally. Luciano, though never completely satisfied with this lifestyle, grew up very used to it, and this is much of where he learned so well to control himself in every regard of his existence.

His family being farmers by trade, Luciano was not too well educated; his parents had always promised him that once he was old enough, perhaps in the future, there would be a way for him to go to a big, fancy college, but as it was he was completely homeschooled. His parents had been generally educated and could teach him some; however, most of what he learned came from his older brother, Flavian, who was a [self-taught] artist had been able to travel a bit.

Flavian was a very kindhearted young man, about 7 years older than his younger brother, and the two brothers grew very close. Times were very tough for the Adessis, as their country was currently occupied by the Germans, but through it all Luciano and Flavian stuck together, keeping each other strong.

That is, until 1940, when Italy officially entered the big war that was sweeping across Europe. Luciano, a youth who mostly kept out of politics and other similar subjects (as his interest lay in cooking and culinary dishes, and he was already known across his little town for being an excellent cook) did not have too much of an opinion on this; although, he was predisposed to despise the Germans due to the strict bondage they had enforced on his life (though, frugal living was all he had known).

He did not have too much of an opinion … at first. In 1941 his brother was forcibly drafted into the army. Traumatised, seeing his closest friend dragged away at the hands of his 'allies' for a “better good” certainly left a black mark and a sour taste in the mouth and mind of the impressionable boy. By this time, his father had died and his mother was very ill due to an epidemic sweeping the area. He stayed and took care of her for a while until she died the following year, leaving the 14 year old boy orphaned.

Not very well educated, and not knowing much of anything except cooking, Luciano was faced with a difficult decision; to stay in his small town, in his small province, with people he knew though not making much of a difference. Or, to go out and try and do something, although he did not know what. Ambitious as he was, he chose the latter. Knowing a sailor, he convinced the man to construct a small vessel for him. With it he was able to travel to many locations in Europe, bringing with him his culinary fruits to many struggling nations (though he also learned to be quite stealthy during this period in his life, and staring death in the face many times), earning for himself a reputation. He was also passively searching for his brother.

In 1943, though he worked mostly for free or for very little money, many had donated to him, and he was better off. Luciano was hired as a cook for a ship that was making its way from England to America.

Once in the strange, new country, Luciano found himself very confused and also a bit homesick. He went to work at a small cafe in New York, where he prepared food but also waited on customers. One day, he had the experience of serving a gentleman who apparently worked for the American government. On his way out, the Luciano saw the man meet another outside the cafe, where the two discussed something apparently important in quiet tones. Upon hearing the mention of a word which sounded like “Sicily”, Luciano's attention was drawn, and as he cleaned up he listened more closely until the two mystery men departed.

By this time knowing much more of what was going on in the world, Luciano had mixed feelings about this. The men had apparently caught him watching, and seeming to realise how clumsy they were being with classified information, they immediately left, leaving the young man without very much information. Though he tried to learn more over the following months, progress was slow. He did not have friends in high places, nor did he have excellent English; Luciano was left to wonder. This slowly ate away at him, leaving him an emotionless, depressed man.

He remained in the US for several months, not really having a “plan” to return home or do anything else in particular; he was simply trying to stay alive at this point as there was nowhere he could really settle down or stay comfortable. He was also again struggling financially. However, in this period, there was an explosion of information. It was August, and everyone was discussing how the heroic allies had liberated Sicily. Sicily being quite near to his home town, Luciano was immediately very nervous and decided he must return to Europe. Eventually he managed to, yet again, get hired on a ship leaving for England. On board, he met a man who told him that he had been in the invasion, and he was searching for a boy by the name “Adessi”. Shocked, Luciano explains who he is, and asks what the man wants and if he knows anything. The man informs him that he had shot an Italian soldier, but right before the soldier died, he told the American to look for his brother, a Luciano Adessi, and to give him a small book and note.

Luciano received these items from the man and knowing the fate of his brother at the hands of the allies, he is never the same again, falling into complete depression. Over time, though he is able to return home (now a war front), these feelings develop into a deep anger toward the war and everyone involved: To Germany and his nation, for forcibly drafting Flavian; to America, for killing him; to himself, for not being able to learn more and protect his own brother. For the first time in his short life, he felt an utter loss of control, and went into a nearly sociopathic state, incapable of feeling anything or thinking of anything except revenge, revenge on all.

In 1945, the war ended. Europe was devastated. Another opportunity for travel arose. Known somewhat throughout the continent for his culinary skills, Luciano is easily able to get jobs unavailable to many others. He again traveled throughout Europe and North America, being able to cook for many in higher positions. However, he was not himself; many times, he attempted to poison government officials, particularly Germans or Americans. He did not intend to kill, necessarily, but several died due to his malicious plots. Eventually he is caught in America, but rather than die at the hands of those who had killed his brother, facing even more eternal humiliation at being unable to save Flavian or himself, Luciano commits suicide, ingesting many of the same ingredients he had used to kill government men, but mainly drinking poisoned wine.

Dying, he broke out of his insanity enough to realise what he had done, calling for a priest and confessing every sin, every murder. After his death, he is about to be buried when the body suddenly goes missing – he has embarked on the even longer journey to New Eden.

Relationships: *well liked by most of the other Rulers.
*Doesn't get along with Be, but the two are mostly indifferent to each other and would not be considered as enemies.
*Gets along averagely with Liu, though he somewhat disdains her.
*Is annoyed at Romashka for ruining dishes by his forced insertion of tea leaves, and for this strange reason the two never become very good friends.
*Good friends with Madrono, Cantua and Cactus.
He is rivals with Tsubaki, however, they end up becoming good friends (though he just can't understand why anyone would like sashimi) Despite the rivalry he greatly respects and looks up to her.

Fun Facts:
- Cares a bit about his appearance, but frequently looks a little sloppy. Has OCD when it comes to food, its taste and its appearance, though not really anything else. This leads to a lot of jokes with others saying “why can't he care as much about his sloppy looks as he does his food?”

-Due to his control over emotions, he is looked to as the friend who gives advice and counseling.
-A bit romantic, but not obsessively like Be, Madrono or Romashka. This is largely because, though girls seem to like him, he is kind of picky when it comes to relationships (and friendships to a degree), not understanding how women really work, and he is also not too flirtatious.

-Due to his obsession with the Romans, he is sometimes he is seen running around while wearing a toga and speaking Latin, which he is fluent in.

-Though he is an excellent cook, he often over seasons his dishes; resulting, while he isn't looking, others secretly remove many of the excessive herbs from their meals while chuckling.

Confusing details: 1) The leaves on his head are in a mohawk pattern. This is hard to draw, but they are more in a vertical line rather than a horizontal one.
2) Like Cantua he is bleeding from the leaves growing from his head. It can be better seen in the portrait.
3) This should be easy to see, but his toga thing goes from a dark green to white.

I am not sure of anything else, but if you encounter a difficulty while drawing him or have a question, I will add it here.

I absolutely ADORE his mohawk! I see the leaves peeping out of his mouth too - not as drastic as Rose's thorns but it does accentuate his sexy somewhat insouciant appearance. Since I'm focusing on wartime OCs at the moment I really appreciate his backstory, though this guy, as a serial killer...Staying classy with the poisoned food. How high is his kill count, and can ANYONE in New Eden match or go beyond it? Also can I call him Bazzy pls

Basil has always been one of my favorite herbs, not just because I throw it on everything but because of its symbolism of hatred. Looking forward to more of your lovely art!
