Well, I’m trying to uphold a personal tradition of doing a Christmas themed picture every year. Last year’s was this one, starbat.deviantart.com/art/Tri… , based on A Christmas Carol. This one is based on the tale of the Nutcracker. Originally, this was a request by ~hooon last Christmas season, and I thought it was a good idea. Somehow I always end up making Twilight look kind of sinister in these Christmas pictures. I should probably keep an eye on that. XDIn case there are any purists out there who have read the original “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” by E. T. A. Hoffmann, and notice inconsistencies here, then please be advised that I have not read the original source material.
Mainly, this image is based, in addition to ponies, on a scene from the animated film “The Nutcracker Prince”, produced by Warner Brothers Pictures in 1990. That has always been one of my absolute favorite Christmas movies. To give further context to this scene, it is directly based on this clip from that film, www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcbSxH… . Give that a watch if you haven't seen this film. It’s only a minute and half long.
Rarity = Clara
Spike = Nutcracker
Lead Diamond Dog = Mouse King
Princess Twilight = Uncle Drosselmeyer
Fluttershy and Dash = Dolls on the toy shelf
Pinkie and Applejack = Toy soldiers on the toy shelf

Well I will say one thing, I have not seen anyone do an My Little Pony interpretation of the Nutcracker Suite before. But I like how you made this fan art. It's pretty good.
I never would've imagine Spike being the Nutcracker or his love interest Rarity playing the dancer. Now what I'm really confused about is head of the Diamond Dogs playing the Mouse King?! Seriously? Why cast him as that? Prince Blueblood could play the Mouse King even better. The others I'm Ok with.

The choice to make the lead Diamond Dog the Mouse King was part of the original request by ~HOON . I saw no reason to change it. In fact, I thought it would be an apt call-back to "A Dog and Pony Show", since Spike fantasized about being Rarity's "hero" in a similar fashion in that episode. Making Blueblood the "Mouse King" I think would actually be a little weird. At least the Diamond Dogs are clearly a different species from Rarity.
But anyway, thank you for the critique. I always like getting these.

This is so beautiful! I love the character picks! The shading is also so amazing! I also like the theme. The Nutcracker and My Little Pony seem really hard to combine, but you pulled it off! The only thing I'd do next time is to maybe space out some of the characters and objects. They all seem a little crammed together, but it's not a big concern. Anyways, this is so amazing. This is by far one of my favorite My Little Pony Christmas themed drawings! Keep up the good work, and have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, too!

1. I figured it would be cute and ironic to put RD in such an uncharacteristically "girly" outfit. XD
2. If the story in this image were to continue, it would be revealed that Discord would play the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy, in the land of dolls. Also, ironic and funny. XD
At least, those are my thoughts on the matter.

It's a short book so it doesn't take very long to read. You will fall in love all over again! You will quickly see why you loved the film "Nutcracker Prince" so much! ^_~
