Description I finished another symmetrical pattern. I was originally planning for it to be a bit more intricate, but this was my first experiment with using a frame to enclose the jewel-like shapes my favorite brush makes, and I didn't have a clear picture of where I wanted all the pieces to go, so I just let it evolve as I drew.

This pattern is available on coffee mugs, blankets, backpacks and more in my Society6 store  and my RedBubble store . You can see some examples of the available products here:  www.deviantart.com/stephobrien…

Hello! I'm here from Project Comment!

I've seen what I think are several pieces of yours in the weekly comment post, and I just thought you'd like to know that I haven't seen much like it on DeviantArt thus far! Great job. I love the symetrical and/or geometric qualities of your work. They are mesmerizing and refreshing, quite the eye-catcher! I won't comment on all of them (a lot of my praise and critiques are the same for each, and I believe in receiving advise from multiple perspectives) but just know that I enjoyed all of them! This one is my favorite, though.

I have a couple quick questions before I begin. First, what medium are you using? I can't tell if it is digital or traditional, which can be it's own praise and critique. It all depends on what you are going for! Second, how do you get such perfectly symetrical designs? My head hurts just thinking about what it would take for someone like me to replicate your style!

On to the suggestions!

The only thing that I can truly talk about is your coloring style. From afar, it looks a bit patchy - Was that the intention? What I mean is that the color in your piece is scratchy, like you outlined with a thin pen and colored with a semi-transucent marker, or something of the sort. Almost like you used layered highlighter, giving the color laydown something like badly textured marker. Gah, I'm having a hard time describing this!

Anyway, The effect leaves it looking a bit unprofessional,. It's not bad, though - the fact that the coloring style is uniform makes it look like an intentional stylistic choice, rather than a rookie mistake. It all depends on whether or not that style was your intention.

Regardless of your intention, the stars (which can't easily be seen without zooming in) could use a but if work. Instead of singular, sparratic dots, why not try building up layers? Make them look more intentional, rather than an afterthought!

I still love your piece, all critiques aside! You're doing great. I live your sense of color, and the symetey behind the piece. Great work!

Thank you very much for the compliments! I’m glad to hear that my art stands out to you and that you enjoy it. I’m sorry for the slow reply; I was creating a marketing course on a deadline, which kept me very busy, but last night I finally got to hit “publish”.

I drew this picture in Krita, using the Multibrush tool. That’s how I got the symmetrical design; when you’re using the Multibrush tool, you can set the number of brushes you use and the mode (symmetrical, snowflake, mirror, etc.), and each stroke you make is replicated according to the number of brushes you used. For this one, I used six brushes in “symmetrical” mode.

Admittedly, the coloring part of this picture didn’t turn out anything like I’d intended, and it was largely a rookie mistake. I was still getting used to a couple of Krita’s brushes, and I had them in the wrong painting mode (normal, when I should’ve been using screen), so they didn’t quite behave as I wanted. I tried to compensate by adding some highlights, but it wasn’t enough to fix the patchy appearance, and I agree that this left it looking rather unprofessional.

Now that I have a better grasp of the brushes and how they work, I might retry this design or something similar at some point, but only if I feel like it; I’ve been thinking of new designs faster than I can draw them, haha.

I’m a bit unclear on what you mean by “Instead of singular, sparratic dots, why not try building up layers?” Do you mean there should be additional layers of glow around the stars?

Thanks again for your compliments and advice. I appreciate the time you put into sharing your thoughts!

Don't worry about the stars! I originally looked at your piece with my phone, which did not allow me to easily zoom in on it,. Your starts are actually quite good!
