Mars trots across the snow-laden ground. It’s been some time since he left his father’s herd, and he still sees no sign of them as the fresh blanket of snow slowly coats the landscape. Lost in his thoughts, he doesn’t at first notice that he is drawing close to another being.

Snap! Mars’s ears stand straight up as he comes to a stop and looks around, trying to spot the source of the startling sound. In the distance, the silhouette of a strange creature stands, facing the vast landscape before them. It doesn’t seem to notice the horse.

Mars recognizes the peculiar shape of this strange creature: a human! Though he’d only seen them a few times growing up, he knew to stay far away from them, as his father had taught him. Why, he’s even heard stories of them snatching up horses never to be seen again! He wonders if it is true. He’d never seen the scary phenomenon in his few years.

Well, better safe than sorry, he thinks. He makes a wide berth around the human as he goes on his way, making sure to get out of earshot of the potentially dangerous beast, looking back to make sure it’s staying where it is as he goes around it. Once he’s clear, he resumes his aimless wandering, disappearing into the thick, snowy brush.
