Spring 2006, Oil Pastel on Bristol Paper, 9" x 12"Study from a National Geographic Mag. One of several images I lost and just found again.

Hehe, when I saw this, I was thinking of all the nice things I was going to say about it, but then I commented on your Dueling Bisons first, and now this seems dull by comparison 
Alright, back to this
Anyway, there's plenty of depth in this artwork. Lots of great contrast such as the extreme darkness of the deer's underbelly and neck as well as in the foliage in the background.
Lots of white in the background give it a somewhat unfinished look, but at the same time, it also makes it look as though the foliage isn't particularly thick and that there's a lot of light coming through.

Yeah, and the sad thing is I never got to see it in person. I took my wife on a trip all across America. We had camp reservations, but by the time we got to Washington, we were three days behind and had to skip through the park, and head back east.
