Chapter One: Leaving Part Two

I stood in the doorway for only a second as I folded the note carefully before stuffing it into my jackets inside pocket; my mind strayed from the task at hand, but only for a brief moment as I came to a sudden realization. I will never see my home again.  I felt a pain through my chest, but I couldn’t afford to waste any more time.

“Let’s get goin’, Girl!” I called out to Candle, who approached me. I mounted her swiftly, quickly turning her walk into a gallop. My family had left sometime after breakfast yesterday; that was less than twenty four hours ago, I was determined to catch up to them.

After an hour of riding my mare had fallen into a slower but steady pace, we had finally reached one of the main roads towards the palace. I was usually thankful that our stable was so far away, but this was not one of those times. Robyn’s note explained that once the news that the Palace was crumbling and the urgent order to gather before the queen had came; It seems people had one of two reactions: to proceed in an orderly fashion, to work as a group and believe in our queens power to save us or to foolishly turn on your brothers and attempt to make it on your own.

It is not totally unreasonable to think that some people would get desperate; they had just been given the news of our impending doom after all, I just regret that I was not there to talk some sense into those poor men. According to the note, they rampaged through our grounds, attempting to steal not only food and other supplies, but one of our hunting duos: Assassin and Romeo. Of course, my family fought back and ensured me that both horses were safe, but I couldn’t help but wonder what happened to those men.

When my mind wandered into reality the sky had darkened significantly, the forest that enclosed me eerie as the sun set behind the distant mountains.  I pulled candles reins and she slowly came to a stop. I slid from her back, tapping her neck. After a full day of riding, I could tell it was starting to take its toll.  I removed her saddle, placing it at the base of a thick oak tree, before leading her towards a nearby stream.  She rank her fill as I stood watch, It was an understatement to say I was on edge after hearing what happened at the ranch and the atmosphere in this place wasn’t exactly comforting.

When she was done we slowly walked back towards the large oak tree, once there I removed the rest of her tack as spoke to her smoothly. I attempted to calm her, but I could tell it wasn’t working. I've always known she was an intelligent mare, it should not come as a surprise to think that she would be able to sense that something was wrong.

She lay beside the tree as I picked blackberries from one of the nearby shrubs before taking my place beside her. This would be as good a place as any to rest for the night, the tree provided decent cover from the wind, and we would do more harm than good if we were to continue with this level of exhaustion.  I leaned against her slightly, closing my eyes as I popped one berry after another into my mouth. It didn't take me long to fall into deep sleep.
