I played and liked the first few Disgaea games, but the gameplay felt too similar to me, I couldn't keep powering through them anymore :s

Well to be fair, a series' primary gameplay elements are generally gonna stay about the same save for spin-offs, but I do get what you mean. Can't really say whether or not 5 might add enough to the core stuff to do it for ya since that's kind of a personal thing but it's prolly worth a looksee to check I reckon.

It just felt like one really long game rather than 3 or so, and there's even some character overlap >.<

Well, hopefully you can get back into it someday. Although, maybe you could watch the storylines on Youtube? I dunno where exactly you stopped or how much you've kept track of the games but even if the gameplay can't quite draw you in due to being too samey for ya there's still new adventures being had. ^^ The original Disgaea trio even got to star in an adventure again for their 10th anniversary in Disgaea D2. ^^
