Description
Surprise; another in the series of Asian-style works for the fall shows. I think this ones probably my best in the series so far - I like the closer look. I've left the kanji off temporarily until I think of a word or phrase that suits it well.This is watercolour, 7" by 11".

Did you start with white paper, or a colored paper?

Thank you so much! The paper is just plain white watercolour paper, and I start with a coffeestain on the background.

The gradients in her outfit is great and the tiny little strands of hair near the skin.

Thank you very much! Well, the little comb is mostly micron pen over which I've painted a light sepia wash, and as for the skin tones, I mix medium yellow with a touch of alazarin and white to make it creamier. By starting at the back of the neck, I was able to pull the darker shades out gradually, giving a softer blend from dark to light instead of layering darker over lighter colours - that makes annoying lines and feathers.

Very nice work. The skin is very well done, and the hair, although it looks like a solid black, still has a very nice.. texture.. if that makes sense xD I'm trying to be all fancy here.

Thanks! I'm glad the hair looks solid black - it's hard to get a nice heavy black because of the nature of the medium. I really appreciate you taking a look - I know you're just about triple-busy getting caught up.
