Geology

Since the days of Lore, the five prongs of the Western Kingdoms have been at war. Mountains cannot part them, nor mile nor land nor sea, and nor can the spray from the waves cool their fury of a long forgotten wrong. Destined to forever clash and lock horns, friendships are broken and enemies made as each facet struggles for power. Welcome to the Western Isles.
Travel Time
It takes at least 2 seasons (6 months) to get from one end of the Isles to the other (Silverthorne to Windborne) on the most direct route, if the fawnling in question is traveling at pace and is not interrupted.
It takes at least several weeks to get through especially mountainous regions, like the borders of Blackwood into Glenmore or Silverthorne.
Travel between Kingdoms is not a short walk, and is often hazardous. All Kingdoms besides your own are hostile to one another, and generally mean that when travell

What other prey animals exist to keep these beasties full besides the poor Fawnlings? .-.

LeakyTrain In reply to Mercivorex [2014-07-02 09:52:06 +0000 UTC]

Fawnlings are the biggest herbivores, so there aren't any giraffes or anything like that I'm not 100% sure on specifics, though I imagine they would be based on real life animals found in similar environments (eg. wallabies in Windborne, which is based on Australia). Keep your eyes open though, because there is a 'Fawnling Friends' sheet in the works!

I figured they were likely the primary prey animals but I doubted only one prey animal species could feed all those predators xD

Haha, yeah - otherwise the predators would be far more bold and terrifying!

Quick questing could there possibly be a pack of wolves that had moved over the border of blackwood and glenmoor to look for prey?

Tigglesaurus In reply to TheDott [2014-05-29 16:46:34 +0000 UTC]

Sorry for the late reply! Wolves don't stray as far as Glenmore, the mountains and guards along the border keep them in Blackwood

I wasn't sure where to ask this question, so I'll just ask it here since this relates to other animals and fawnlings. x3

I saw where you said that fawnlings are the tallest/larges herbivores in the Western Isles but was wondering if there were perhaps any wild goat or sheep species? I was thinking maybe Alpine Ibex? They grow up to 149-171 cm and around 67-117 kilos. They prefer mountainous terrain, so they could probably inhabit pretty much any area of the Isles.

And of course if they're too big maybe there could be a smaller species? I just thought this was an interesting idea because I've noticed a lot of fawnling companions are birds, small herbivorous mammals or small omnivores or carnivores like foxes and things. So they'd be a bit different I suppose.

There are mountain goats in the mountains in fact ^_^ The TWI map gives a bigger overview of the terrain and such: fav.me/d5mpy4o

Yes.

Sounds maybe stupid but I dreamed last night of Blackwood fawnlings, Tundra and ehm...pygmy mammoth.

Maybe because of that documentation I saw not long ago about mammoth on the Wrangel Island. The survived there much longer than the populations on the continent because the isle was untouched by humans for so long. The youngest bones that got found can be dated around 2000 BC so the exist quiet long there and since TWI are untouched by humans as well...and if animals like Scimitar Cats and Thylacine survived there why not small mammoth.

Like on all island populations they are of course much smaller between 150 cm - 200cm (like the three dwarf mammoth species Mammuthus creticus , Mammuthus exilis and Mammuthus lamarmorai ) , live in small herds of 5-7 animals, they grew a thicker coat in winter but in summer the lose it completely and they are wandering with the seasons from the tundra of Blackwood to the coasts of Glenmore and Silverthrone. They would make a tasty meal for the Icebear and the cave lions and friendly "companions" for the fawnlings if it comes up to all things that have something to do with food. In winter they free the ground from snow to get access to the grass underneath and fawnlings can eat that grass too (without working to free it from snow) and in the other seasons fawnlings can take advantage of the fact that those mammoths can reach trees and fruit they can't reach. If the feed on a tree there's always something falling down to get picked up by smaller animals, fawnlings could take advantage of that fact.

I know it's a stupid idea but I found it somehow interesting just concerning the scientific things about it.

Awww, they're adorable!! Sadly though, according to Rae, the Fawnlings are the biggest herbivores around so even pygmy mammoth would be large compared to them! The Blackwood is mostly forest I think anyhoo, we don't have any open tundra biomes! They are certainly interesting though. It's impressive how humans can wipe out a species so easily

DatNachtmaehre In reply to Tigglesaurus [2014-03-03 14:25:07 +0000 UTC]

They are cute aren't they? ^^

I like the Mammuthus creticus most. They are so small and cuddly with their height of 1,13 m and their weight of 310 kg. Adorable little Dumbos.

Impressive and sad at the same time. The only excuse those paleo hunters have are that they didn't know what they are doing when they hunt all those animals down. They hunted for food and clothes, the hunted to survive and they didn't know better. But humans today know better an they hunt animals to extinction for fun or to make money. It's a shame.

I don't want to imagine what would happen to all the animals on the TWI when humans arrive there for the first time. I guess the will hunt the glenmore does to sell their horns as unicorn horn and all the stags for their antlers. The ice bear and the cave lion for their pelt or to make stuffed animals out of them. They would burn down the plains to make farmland out of it and so on. And after one or two decades half of the wildlife is either extinct or on the gape to extinction.

What other prey species inhabit the Isles?  For the Oakferns, does the jungle beyond the caves and canyons teem with okapi or sambar?  Lemurs and monkeys?  I assume the mountains host tasty pika, gophers, and other rodents.  Are there mountain goats/sheep?  What about "regular" ceruvinoids such as deer - including the little critters like dikdik, pudu, and muntjaks?  Are there equidae of any sort on the Isles?  Does Windborne host wallabies, and 'roos?

And I will never see trees with the same eyes again.
