A cute little light blue esk was bathing in the sunshine in her window box. Not too far away from her home was an animal shelter, which was getting quite a bit of business, both good at bad. It was unfortunate that so many pets were being brought back. She shook the thought from her head; it couldn't be so bad, right? After a little stretch of her legs, Vesaria hopped out of the box to take a little walk. Before she really started walking past the shelter, she noticed an indent in the tall grass close by. Curiosity drove her to see what it was, ready to help if something needed it. Instead what she found was a statue, mostly intact, that resembled a cat with a halo and wings. It was such a cute statue, which used to sit in front of the shelter. She didn’t visit often, but she still remembered it being there. The thought crossed her mind as to why they moved it, but the esk didn’t think much of it. She turned away from it and continued on her little walk, happy to stretch her legs.

When she came back around to where the statue was, another thought crossed her mind as she remembered the pets that kept returning to the shelter. It didn’t linger there very long, as a car was pulling into the parking lot. Another pet was being brought home. Though it was a little sad, the esk decided to continue on her way back to her window box.

A few weeks passed and she found herself going back to the spot where she found the statue. As she sat by it, she noticed a truck pulling into the parking lot of the animal shelter. The same truck had pulled in not too long ago; maybe they just wanted another pet? She hoped that as the person walked out with a timid looking puppy. The truck aggressively drove off, leaving Vesaria just watching it leave. Maybe the animals in the shelter needed something to protect them, but maybe it’s just innocent mistakes and a genuine love for animals. That’s what she hoped anyway. She walked away from the statue without a second thought.

A few months now passed, and the truck had come a few too many times to be considered normal. There’s no way someone can go through pets that quickly or house them well enough. Though she hoped nothing bad would come of it, she decided to wait for the next time the truck went by to investigate what they did. As it finally pulled in after a few hours of waiting, the little blue esk lept of her window box and scampered over to the shelter. She let herself inside and looked around, never actually having been in there before. She sat down and watch as the human asked for another puppy, clearly being what they wanted more than anything else. There were plenty of good adult dogs, even cats and kittens; but they insisted on a puppy. The worker informed them that they were starting to run low on the number of puppies they had, and it would take a few months to get more; they weren’t breeding this time of year. They didn’t care and raised their voice in anger, wanting one of the puppies they had. The worker went to the back and presented him with one, the poor pup trembling in her hands. The person quickly grabbed it, having already paid, and left the shop in a hurry. Vesaria followed them out, but didn’t catch them before they were already driving off. Hopefully nothing bad would happen to the pup, but who knows anymore? She slowly walked back to her boundary, stopping by the statue again. It had been a while since she’d seen it, and it was certainly showing signs of nature taking hold. It was beginning to crack in many places, almost not resembling what it originally looked like. It was a little sad, but it was only a statue, right? The head was mostly intact, and as she raised a foot to rest it gently on the head, she noticed how worn down it looked. While the color was starting to fade on other parts of the stone, this seemed much worse. Almost as if it had been worn down while it was still in front of the shelter. A vague memory of humans stopping before entering crossed their mind, and the two things connected; it must have been a loved statue to be so worn down. Once again the thought crossed her mind, and it became something that seemed like a better and better idea. The shelter could use a protector against the people who wanted to do bad things, like whatever the human in the truck was doing, and an extra friend for the animals that lived inside. Perhaps it was about time something was done about it..

This is such a cute yet kind of sad story.
I love the way you wrote Vesaria as a curious and caring Esk, that loves to help others and do what’s right.
Those people in the van seemed bad. I hope that Aku can help the animals c:
