Description "Something wrong there, Hilda?"

"It--Its the Sphinx. She asked me what I'm carrying and..."

"...And didn't you answer?"

"I did! I told her it was a basket of radishes. But then she just...Ignored me."

"Well, of course. You ansered her riddle, so she's letting you pass."

"But, that's not really a riddle..."

"Hilda, dear, you shouldn't bother the Shinx with semantics..."

Behold: the Feral Sphinx of Vistallah! A creature with the bust of a woman, the body of a cat, the wings of an eagle, and the stature of a monument! These monsters spend thier lives guarding a selected stretch of road, and harrassing any travelers that dare to pass them by!

...Of course, the type of road defended and the severity of the harrassement vary greatly depending on the attitude of the individual Sphinx. Some individuals are solitary and bitter, but others are much more sociable...

Riddles and antics aside, I don't think I've ever seen a sphinx before who was cleaning her paws as a cat does.
Calico sphinx? Her coloration reminds me of that.

Calico indeed! That was my intention when I drew this! As to the cleaning of her paws....Yeah, I guess you don't see that too often in art. But it did fit right along with the idea of modeling her off a calico cat.

Hilda is right. That was no riddle.

Technically correct. But Daddy is also right--you probably shouldn't nit-pick details like that with a Shinx as big as she is....

"What is the air speed velocity of an unladen swallow?"

"African or European swallow?"

"You may pass.... grumble..."

I bet no-one else will get this reference. But an awesome pic anyway.

Now why can't I have this kinda sphinx guarding ancient magic or untold treaser one of these days?

Heh. They are cute guardians. In a wierd sort of way...

Of course, the treasure of the barn isn't quite so anicent, magical, or untold...

TinyPet In reply to TriffRaff [2010-12-06 16:18:18 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm it is at least untold. Because no ones cares to speak about.

I know. I'd kinda like to have a sphinx like that guarding like the untold treasure of Malkarrise or the A Ancient mystic tomes of Rorreck. You know, big heroic quest but with out the lethal final boss to get the goods so you can handle the final boss?

I'm guessing this Sphinx doesn't want to give complicated riddles

Not for ordiary day-to-day activities. The locals probably wouldn't stand for that...

What would happen if you answer wrong?

Given the typical nature of "punishment" for humans in this land, would it be wrong of me to repeatedly throw the riddles?

"What is your name?"
"John, no wait ... Jim ... Damnit I knew this this morning ... Oh well, I guess you got me again!"

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TriffRaff In reply to RageWood [2010-12-01 01:08:33 +0000 UTC]

He-heh. That would depend entirely on if she likes you or not! Of course, if she really liked you, you'd get the hard questions that you couldn't get even if you wanted to...

Me: "Wait, hasn't the location of Atlantis been lost for centuries?"

Sphynx: "Well ... you should start looking then, shouldn't you?"

If thats a road, I'd love to see a highway.

Anyway, yeah, what Mrs. Sphinx did just didn't make sense.

TriffRaff In reply to ThatFreakyGuy [2010-12-01 01:14:41 +0000 UTC]

Well, a path to the family barn could be considered a road... If you try really really hard to think that way....

Same with the question. Some of them will stretch the definitions of things if it'll help them live where they want to...
