The towering gates of Ahrk Ravis loomed ahead of them.
Many rumors existed about the city. Both glorious and horrifying.
All that was known was that it had existed since the earliest records.

It looked as if it had withstood over a thousand years and would continue to do so for another.
The party pressed onwards, wary of what might lay inside.

If it's intended as an illusion or not, I don't know. After seeing these high city walls, it reminded me of the outside of the city in the Judge Dredd movie, where the outcasts roam. -- Your inspiration, perhaps?

Awesome, really like the details on top of the wall. It's kind of odd with the rocks though that it's the same shapes all around but they're getting smaller as they get closer, opposite of what similar objects would do in perspective. 

Also, more overlap and variation to the rocks -Paick
