Karlotta looked at herself closely in the mirror. She was almost without make-up. Just now her mother had tied her blonde, long hair into a plait and formed a chignon. Then she had put on a volumizer at the back before disappearing under her bonnet and headscarf. Not a strand peeked out from under the updo.

Karlotta continued to look at herself now. The headscarf framed her face, which together with the natural look created a modest appearance. Maybe it really did suit her. But it was strange. And above all it was one thing: totally unfamiliar.

The doctoral student therefore remained sceptical. She had told her mother about Melissa Schreiber and the New Look. She had been working next door since the summer semester. In the Department of Early Modern History. As a research assistant, she already had her own seminars.

Of course, the capacity at the faculty was not Karlotta, but Melissa. The mysterious person who had brought the New Look to Steele. And this New Look was now spreading among her students.

Karlotta didn't want to know anything about it. But when she told her mother Sabine about Melissa, she suggested she try it out. And caught her daughter off guard.

And now Karlotta was sitting at the dressing table in her mother's bedroom with her headscarf on. What else would happen? The doctoral student was suspicious. And Sabine had heard the suspicion.

"And now?" There was still scepticism in her daughter's voice.

"You can keep it on for the seminar today, can't you?"

Silence. Working thoughts on Karlotta's part, quick-witted waiting on Sabine's part.

"But no mask! Honestly! I won't put on a mask! Never!"

"It's not compulsory yet either, darling. Get used to the headscarf first!"

"Get used to it? Today I want to leave it on. But tomorrow I'll go back to university as normal!"

"But maybe you'll like it. In any case, it looks great on you. I'm sure everyone will tell you that. And I think it will have a positive effect on your career. I mean, think of all the ideals that you have.

"You mean learn and keep quiet. That's all I need!"

"Well, you could do it on a trial basis while you're studying. In the evening, for an hour."

"No, I won't. I'll go to uni like this today. Once!"

Sabine realised she wasn't getting anywhere. Not for the moment. But she knew she had her foot in the door.

Two hours later, Karlotta was walking down the corridor at the university. She was wearing her headscarf, plus a long, only slightly fitted robe. She felt queasy. How would her students react to her wearing the New Look?
