Being mute, Penny has to rely on their actions to speak louder than words. Yet this has never halted them from enjoying the finer things in life. In fact, most would say they’re quite mature for their age as they have a very easygoing, kindhearted nature that compliments their friendly disposition; seriously they don’t have a hard time getting along with everyone regardless of how rude they may be.
Those who spend a lot of time with Penny may also say they’re optimistic, confident and supportive that things will always work out so long as they keep trying or simply keep a positive attitude. Thank goodness they’re perfectly fine with delays or possible problems they may come across.
However, this good-natured bread maker is by no means perfect as, like every piece of toast, they have a few crisp corners. Penny has a horrible habit of becoming overly excited about trying new things or perhaps on a favorite subject of theirs and jumps in without considering the consequences. Which people use, mixed with their unguarded trust towards all, to persuade Penny into doing (or believing) something that may be farfetched or out of their comfort zone; they’ll be upset about it but because they believe they deserved that for being dumb not that the person is mean.
Still, the trait that affects Penny’s life most of all is definitely their workaholic attitude. There’s a constant itch at the back of their head that there’s still more they can get done and by leaving anything they could possibly be mistaken for lazy or uncaring, and they love their job too much to let anyone believe that. So their life slowly becomes absorbed by it. It’s generally very hard to pull Penny away from their work but you may find it even more difficult if you try to tell them what their doing is bad.
History:
The beginning of this story takes place in a growing town near the frigid mountains of the north. Magic was dwindling and times were changing for magic users in a big way. Technology was laying its roots and spreading quickly into every source it could latch itself to, from your everyday farmer to creating new work such as the hardworking engineer. Families are forced to adapt while others find themselves changing up their life entirely.
Two women from completely different families will soon meet and fall in love, thus laying down the story foundation of one very special child; our dear Penny.
Felicity is a witch from a family of magic based doctors. She prides herself on her work and strives to care for all who walk into the facility. The type of young adult parents felt immense pride in gushing about, and in doing so, there has been quite the word around for her heart. Such words grabbed the interest of a lovely witch by the name of Nora. Now, Nora’s family was forced into a life of change when their enhancement-type magic became a dying art, trading their life to pursue a more magic-less business as a means of evolving with the times. They began a new life as a line of bakers, opening a bakery that carried breaded treats and sweets for the townsfolk of the lonely mountain town.
A birthday in passing and Felicity was introduced to the beautiful Nora as they stumbled hopelessly in each other’s company, instantly they became infatuated. Of course, it wasn’t an instant relationship. They both pined for years for the other, families opposing of their courting as it was either too undignified to marry a former witch so reliant on technology or too obscene to be pursuing someone unwilling to follow the shifting tides.
It wasn’t until one fateful summer evening that they cast aside their families disagreements and professed their love to one another.
It wasn’t all sunshine and roses though, as the families quickly found out about their daughter’s secret relationship, and harped on them relentlessly for their decision. This wasn’t right, things should have never gotten to this point, it wasn’t supposed to be this way. What would the town say if they knew? Felicity and Nora were appalled, realizing the town they’d grown up in wasn’t the town they knew any longer, and they needed to leave. Against all odds they would be together, thus eloping, starting the life they always thought would never be possible.
In a quaint town of both technology and magic, the newlyweds found their perfect home. Everyone was so welcoming and open, it felt freeing to be a part of such a lovely town. It was settled by the expansive ocean, not even a miles walk from the gorgeous open air and rhythmic waves lapping against the warm sand. As a new town, it seemed everyone was there for a fresh start and now it was just them, until one day, a small flababy was left at their bakery’s door. They had no idea why someone would leave their child in the couple's care but Felicity and Nora weren’t about to leave the curly-tangerine child out on their steps either.
However, their biggest challenge yet (and perhaps also slight reasoning into why the child was abandoned), was the fact their dear redhead would not cry, scream, or make any sound in general. Come to find out they physically couldn’t. It was a mutation from birth, no sounds could be made now nor ever in their lifetime.
Instantly, Felicity and Nora decided they would raise the baby as their own, secretly they had always wanted one and had been discussing how they could go about this, and that’s how the legacy of Penny began.
At a fairly young age, it was known that Penny was different from the other children. Sure, they couldn’t talk, but they also didn’t enjoy the same things other local kids loved. Penny focused mainly on what their mothers did, learning small magical aspects from Felicity. They had an instant infatuation with the art of magic, feeling free and communicative with others in this fashion, but Felicity and Nora were hesitant on Penny using it so openly due to the scars of their past. However, it was hard to keep Penny away from it, as they had already set their mind on that lifestyle, so they gave in and found a way to incorporate magic into their bakery business to give Penny the best of both worlds.
Not much else can be said about Penny’s younger years. Fairly normal and carefree life was the standard their parents created for them. Learning new things was the constant norm for them. Sign language, baking, first aid, magic, and many other customary skills were taught to a young Penny. Leaving much of their time devoted to studying, working, and helping around the house. This wasn’t to say they hatred their time growing up, it simply started to become overbearing.
While they meant well, Penny’s parents sheltered them immensely. It was the constant suppressed fear of being forced to change and adapt that left Penny feeling trapped, becoming more apparent in their later years when others their age began starting a life for themselves and left the town to find their own purpose; new businesses, new relationships, out doing more than what Penny was accomplishing themselves. They had become too focused on their life making their parents happy that they had lost sight of the bigger picture in order to live a life of happiness themselves.
Penny began spiraling into a mindset of it being too late to change, that no matter what they did, a life of their own was simply impossible and accepted this fact for about a year until one fateful meeting.
It was almost like dream, a mermaid sitting upon the shore, waves crashing against the sparkling tail of a half-fish woman. They had read about them in their studies and even saw hints of some but never had they met one until now. Little did they know this mermaid would be the one to change their outlook on life.
Their first meeting, almost a fleeting moment of acknowledgment, and she was out of sight. But a determined Penny took it upon themselves to visit that spot every night in an attempt to catch the mermaid again. A week later and that wish came true. It was a moment of panic, a quick spur of the moment, a hand to the shoulder and then their eyes met. Penny caught up to their actions, and in a fluster, signed their words gesturing of an apology, only to receive back a confused glance. Penny tried everything to communicate with the mermaid but decided a new course of action would need to be taken, gave their goodbye and promised to return.
It took a few more nights but eventually, the mermaid came back and Penny was overjoyed. Pen and paper in hand, Penny began communicating, teaching, and enjoying her nights out on the beach with their new friend; of course, bringing special treats they had made from scratch to please their ocean friend of their desire to taste various landwalker foods.
Eventually, they began to be able to communicate fairly easily and soon saw each other nearly every night. Slowly Penny started to understand their standing in life, that it wasn’t too late to start branching out and build something for themselves, for if they could do this then surely anything was possible if enough work was put into it. But their paranoid parents eventually grew suspicious and questioned Penny about their nightly whereabouts. Unafraid, the Florges expressed their newfound feeling about their life, the shelter, and their self-discovery, it was as if a weight had been lifted off their shoulders. It was this conversation that pushed Penny into a new direction.
A week later, Penny met the mermaid for a final time, signing words of goodbye and immense gratitude. Not too much later and Penny was off on their own, traveling for a couple of months doing odd jobs, and only spending about a week in one area before moving on. Finally, they came across the small, but the promising town of Bluhenburg. It was a slow start, yet, Penny knew they wanted to be here more than anything else and after a baker’s position opened up (a pleasant reminder of their home), Penny rooted themselves as a new resident. They’ve spent two years of their life here now and hopefully many more to come.
