Description Update: I'm not actively involved with the project now because school has started up for me, but if you're interested in the game & such, you can help out by supporting the STEAM GREENLIGHT

I've been doing a lot of sprite work recently for a open world multi-player sandbox//survival//adventure game called Edge of Space! It's in development, hopes to drop in August, and has just started a run on Kickstarter .

It's not meant to be Isaac Clarke in the cockpit btw, just a gameDev joke which unfortunately went wayyyyy over my head when I was translating concept art into sprites

Ahh, it's cool that people are still getting into pixelart; I hope it's something you keep up with!~

Thanks so much~

A great piece! Would you suggest any current web tutorials or software for sprite work? All the web tut's I have found are extreamly old, with outdated software and concept art. Thank you for sharing your artwork, great stuff.

Well haha, the reality of pixel art is that a lot of the software that you used 10 years ago is the same software that you still use today; I used msPaint up until I got windows7, when they changed a lot of the dynamics to have it mimic more advanced photoediting programs. So for my recent stuff I've reinstalled PhtosohopCS2 and turned off all the options that give anti-aliasing.
People will suggest all sorts of different programs; I'm familiar with the layout and hotkeys of Photoshop, and it offers tools for animation and so forth, so I've customized it to fit my needs, (even though it's not strictly the "purest" software to do pixelart in). The Software part is honestly completely up to you.

PixelJoint (+tutorials) is a great place to find active and talented pixelartists, and they've got a forums with plenty of discussions about techniques which are really helpful. Pixels/Sprites are a combination of a lot of different rules and elements, and googling them one by one gives you the best results in terms of getting the best/right tutorials. Pixels are a relatively obscure medium nowadays, and no one tutorial really covers everything (a bit the same as any kind of art though). I guess if you're serious about wanting to learn it, you're gonna have to look at a decent variety of stuff to get a good overall impression of what work you need to do to reach a certain level. PixelJoint is probably the best place to start, and from there you'll begin to find what you need.

Wow. Thank you so much for your reply. I will study PixelJoint and the different artist. I didn't realize the difference in sprite and pixel. It looks like I have much to learn, lol. But I'm not on any schedule so I'm going to try. Thank you again, for such a comprehensive answer.

Ohhh. Me likes this
I love small mechs such as these more than the big 30 meter ones. They are ideal for a fight in a city.

Gratz on the Daily Deviation

PS: I did not notice Isaac Clake was in the cockpit untill now. Good one LOL

xSheepi In reply to snowskeeper [2012-09-19 12:32:08 +0000 UTC]

It was supposed to be this year, though I think that was a bit optimistic given that the game had only been in development a few months when that call was made. I think the new goal is sometime end of October;

Here's a link to the main EoS Website , where they often drop updates on what's being patched in Beta and stuff. There are side links there to Forums/DevBlogs etc, which should be useful if you check them every once in a while.

Congratz on the game being successfully funded.
It wasn't really a surprise seeing how good it looks, and with art like yours!

I wonder how many comments about Isaac Clarke have been made so far.

Maybe it's hard wired into the movements of the pilot so when the pilot exhales and inhales the body of the robot suit moves, like if the pilot where to belch and start wafting away the taco breath the mech' suit would react the same despite being unable to produce breath at all... I dunno.
It's just kinda wierd without context.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

xSheepi In reply to GazTV-inc [2012-09-22 20:08:53 +0000 UTC]

I dunno, it's not really meant to read as "breathing", just sort of idle bouncing; which (I think anyway) is a lot more visually appealing than something which just stops and remains completely static when it's not in use.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GazTV-inc In reply to xSheepi [2012-09-22 22:20:50 +0000 UTC]

Ah, well yeah, but roots don't usually bounce or breathe... unless there's someone inside it wired into the movement matrix like I said. Kinda like how when Coop (from Megas XLR) dusts his hands the robot does too (there's no movement matrix between Coop and Megas, but maybe they're so psychologically synched Megas reacts to every little brain impulse Coop has.
So it's easy to explain if anyone asks.
