Description Being a child, I grew up with the bed-time stories of my grandfather (he had a hidden chest of stories in the attic, which I often tried to find, unsuccessfully, though).
Some of my favorites were the stories about Muma Pădurii.

She is a magical creature, living in the forests. Literally, her name means Mother of the Forest.
Though most of the times she is presented in Romanian myths as being ugly, mean and revengeful, I learned from my grandfather that she was like that only with mean, unmerciful people. She is a protector of the forest, revengeful towards those who disrespected it and its little inhabitants.

I do believe I still hear her sometimes riding her mortar *( Muma Pădurii is often described as riding in a mortar, rowing a pestle - similar representation as Baba Iaga in eastern European myths).

Happy to submit this to monthly theme: October – witch

much to you all!

edit: I can’t decide whether it is to dark. On the two monitors in my house, it has completely different darkness/brightness level… so I’m confused

I love the story as well as the drawing. I am a great lover of fairytales and myths so your work really speaks to me.

I wish I could hear all the stories your grandfather has told you. ....

Well, now it’s a bit impossible to do this, since he is among the mystic creatures he told me about when I was little… but if you wish, you’re mostly invited to come and visit my childhood fairytale universe, in my grandparents’ village. There are lots of green forests around (where muma padurii strolls around), and then there are happy cows walking on the village’s alleys, delicious cakes and others, and others...
It’s a wonderful and inspiring place to be!

Thank you nicely! I’m glad you liked it!
…myths are always fascinating for the human mind, but also hard to represent, as they depend a lot on persons’/ watcher/ creator “relationship” with that myth …so I guess it makes it so much more interesting to see different perceptions on the same one
