I'm an artist and natural history enthusiast. I like skulls and other dead stuff, scary movies, hiking and being outside, playing with my dog, and numerous other things. Most of them are pretty nerdy.

Awesome. How do you prefer to clean them?

I keep dermestid beetles but I usually just use them for tiny and delicate things. I macerate everything else, which is basically where you just put it in a bucket of hot water and let it rot. Smelly but it works great!

Koeskull In reply to Shadyufo [2012-08-21 01:18:14 +0000 UTC]

I see. how long does maceration take ususally? I've tried it a couple times but only when there was just a little flesh stuck on. Right now I have a fox skeleton that was basically just held together and nothing else. Taking quite a while but I just have it outside with no other source of heat..

Heat definitely speeds things up. I usually do mine during our super hot summers we have here. But even then it can take from a couple of weeks to a month or more. Just takes time and a lot of patience. Well worth it in the end though!

Thank you so much! You should go for it if it is something you are interested in! I certainly enjoy working with skulls and bones. It's very rewarding to take something that would disintegrate in a pasture or just be thrown in the trash and give it a new life.

Heh , I'll have to find some bones first! And do some research , but i think im gonna try it (:

Wow. You're very talented.
I love shopping around for painted skulls, but I've never heard of them going for as cheap as this.
I might invest someday.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shadyufo In reply to Floppsies [2012-02-19 04:18:34 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

I keep the prices on them as reasonable as I can but my painted skulls are definitely some of the most unique out there. A lot of hard work and TLC goes into each one, from cleaning to design to painting and on to sealing and preserving the paint job. Got a bunch of new ones I'm working on right now too.

Hope to do business with you some time!

Floppsies In reply to Shadyufo [2012-02-19 04:24:21 +0000 UTC]

You definitely, might~
And I love Day of the Dead skulls.
(Because my lovely is Hispanic and always makes it festive here for it.)
I actually live in GA, but I've been wanting to own some human bones, painted up in the Día de Muertos fashion.
It sucks its one of the two states that says no to them.
But I own a few domestic dog skulls and other miscellaneous animals.
I never would have thought a regular dog skull would be more expensive than a fox's, but I guess I understand it depending where you are.
So much roadkill here in GA.

Awesome! I love Day of the Dead imagery. So beautiful!

Well howdy, neighbor! Oh I know. For the longest time I didn't want a human skull but the idea grew on me and I finally started saving up for one, only to find out TN doesn't allow possession of them either. Oh well!

Very cool! Yeah domestics tend to go for a lot more than wild critters. I think it's because there is a steady supply of wild critter parts from the taxidermy and hunting industry, but domestics are usually buried or otherwise disposed of when they pass away. We have a ton of wild dogs around here so I've found a bunch of dog skulls over the years though. Pretty neat to see the variation in the shapes and sizes of their skulls.

Shadyufo In reply to Vuorazas [2012-01-13 00:43:35 +0000 UTC]

Hey thank you! I appreciate that!

Here, there and everywhere! I'm always finding stuff and dragging it home (creeks, pastures, woods and old country roads) but I also get stuff online too! Ebay, the Fur, Hide & Bone Livejournal community, and the Taxidermy.net forums are all great places to check out for affordable skulls!

I have to check it out! I do not very often find some bones in the forest and they mostly haven't got a good quality :/
