I may have already answered this in a different comment - still working through messages from last month and it's hard to keep track of what's what - but anything you want to know, just send me a note. You don't need to ask if you can ask: worst case scenario, I don't know the answer.

Ha! I know the feeling. You run into the same people over and over again through something like Flash Fiction Month without realising you're not actually watching them directly.

Hey there, I was wondering if it's better to upload my story chapters as pdf or text.
Also, how have you been?

Hi! There's a long answer and a short answer to that question. Short answer: text. Definitely text. Long answer: text unless you're submitting something that depends heavily on precise formatting or weird fonts , in which case PDF is the way to preserve that. In most cases text is vastly preferable because it's compatible with more browsers and, being reflowable, will display better on differently sized screens: use that unless you've got a very particular reason for wanting each word locked to a particular position on the page (eg. in a poem where the lines form an image) or your story relies on multiple/unusual fonts to make sense.
Things are good, thanks! I've got some neat events lined up this month - including a place on the author panel at Winchester Comic Con - and Ten Little Astronauts recently passed 25% of its funding target. I'm also running a draw for a free book when it reaches 125 supporters, and just now it's on 124: it's certainly an interesting time!

Those are definitely some unique fonts. XD
I'm starting to work on my sci-fi story while releasing it as a web-fiction series.
I just feel like it matches my writing style to aim towards something like how one punch man got started
if you know about that series and how it began as a webcomic before a manga then an anime.
I was releasing most of my stuff in PDF, before I noticed that you have most of your deviations in text.
I'm glad to have asked my question it helps a lot.
That's good to hear, I'll be glad to post about it on social media.

Yeah - that's one I really couldn't have done without PDF. It depends on the site you're using as well: one story had to be a PDF on dA because it was the only way I could find of including different coloured text, but it works fine directly on my blog which includes that option in the editor. It may have been possible to force red and green text by using HTML, but it would have been a chore to set up especially knowing that it still might not have worked. Best of luck with the fiction! I'm actually not all that familiar with One Punch Man but I've seen other things follow much the same format: Prequel started as very simple text and GIFs but more recent instalments have involved full-blown Flash games.
Please do! I'm amazed that last giveaway slot is still available, to be honest: last time I ran one of these, the final couple of spaces went ridiculously quickly, and the previous eight or so for this one were even faster! Any help getting the word out about Ten Little Astronauts in general is hugely appreciated, even (and maybe especially) if there's no particular milestone coming up. It's got a massive amount of support behind it already, but it'll need even more if it's going to make it into bookshops so I'm more or less relying on friends telling friends.

Yeah, sometimes I find posting things the way I want them to be a little difficult on my platforms.
The red and green font colors really excite the eyes. And who needs more work with HTML, when we can just find other means?
Have you ever thought about making a patreonΒ or using hashtags onto Instagram?
I find patreon as a secure way to receive a more supportive fan-base and InstagramΒ seems to catch a lot of attention when used correctly.
I'd glad to have filled the spot but unfortunately,Β I'm not able to.

I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. haha
Hoping to get hired sometime soon, went to an interview today and they said it's a toss up between myself and another candidate.
So I decided to call back on a canceled interview with Chipotle to reschedule onto Thursday.
All I need is a part-time minimum wage job so that I can get rid of the worry of some financial security.
I'm sure after that it would fix my odd case of writer's block I've had these past few months.
I do feel the same about word of mouth being the main push towards getting personal work known.

I've actually thought quite a bit about using Patreon and more or less plan to at some point. Unfortunately, there are a few things stopping me from doing it just now. The main one is that I think my work is best suited to monthly subscription but I'm not sure I could commit to monthly rewards just now: my future's awfully uncertain.
Beyond that, Ten Little Astronauts is very much my main focus at the moment and I don't feel as though I can ask people to support my work through Patreon while I'm also asking them to help get my book into print: a trade paperback distributed by Penguin Random House is probably going to do more for me financially than a Patreon campaign, and a one-off pledge is much easier for people to commit to than a subscription.
Finally, I've got a couple of things lined up that are likely to eat up a lot of time, so even if I set myself up with a page on Patreon, I'd probably struggle to find the time to attract patrons. The Ten Little Astronauts campaign is in some ways massively reassuring, since clearly there are people out there who are willing to support my work, but reaching out to them takes time and effort and those are always in short supply. Usually because I'm putting them towards fun new things, though: it's not the worst position to be in!
Instagram does sound like another option, though: Pinterest has been suggested too. I've been meaning to set up on one or both - especially because I've noticed that photos do get a lot more attention than plain old text - but haven't got around to it yet. It's always hard to know if it's better to try something new and uncertain or to put that energy towards doing what's already been working.
Best of luck with your interviews! Hopefully you'll get something soon: ideally one of the ones you've already lined up. It's definitely tough not knowing what you'll have coming in week to week: my last job was on a zero hours contract and one of the other guys there couldn't get a mortgage because he had no guaranteed income. Even a part-time job is better than that if it's fairly steady!

I can see your problem with committing to patreon.
I try to make the rewards more than a dollar just nice little things like sending a one-time calligraphy writing of their choice.
It's difficult to find rewards as we are writers and not painters/drawers etc.
Another difference is that writing isn't much of a craft that just forms out of the thin air.
People love their easy to read photos, short videos, and quick content so instagramΒ works out.
I haven't tried Pinterest, I'll have to start looking into that as I put out more chapters.
Sometimes I feel the need to incorporate some drawing or photography into my writing.

DamonWakes In reply to HanOneSail [2017-03-17 13:26:16 +0000 UTC]
I'm actually not too concerned about the trouble with coming up with rewards. I've been putting out serialised novella chapters (and before that individual short stories) through my newsletter for a while now, and that's the sort of thing I think could work well on Patreon: patrons would get early access to chapters as well as the book once it's finished. It wouldn't be too hard to put out short stories now and then as well, but the problem at the moment is that I can't be sure I'd be able to commit to writing those rewards every single month. The launch of Ten Little Astronauts coincided with Flash Fiction Month, for example, and there were days I was writing until 3am then getting up at 6.
One thing I've found that adds a visual element to writing is simply to share a quote with a nice background. Having not yet tried Instagram or Pinterest I can't be sure how that would go down there, but on Twitter they seem to attract far more retweets than plain text (and have the advantage of getting around the 140 character limit). I've been looking into 3D printing items for people as well. For the most part I've been considering that as a crowdfunding reward, but if you can get hold of the equipment I figure it might be an option for your Patreon as well. The printers are becoming more and more common and the people who own them usually seem happy to help with an interesting new project.

Thanks! Yeah, things are good right now. I don't know if you've had a chance to look into Ten Little Astronauts yet but it hit 25% funding literally on my birthday so that's pretty neat! I'm actually getting the 25% milestone reward out to supporters right now.
