I've had this account for a while now but I mostly used it to browse other artist's work. I'm using this DA account to post photos now instead of just browse other people's stuff is that there are some amazing prop artists on DA and it would be nice to be able to compliment them on their work without having to use an account with absolutely no info. "Some anonymous person with no info likes your work" isn't as meaningful as "some guy who also does something similar and can appreciate what you went through to get the effects you got".

Also, I'm surprised that the jpgs store camera and image editing software data. Neat.

Also also, if you're reading this and like beautiful paintjobs on Nerf guns, check out electronicsgenius.blogspot.com… this guy, his work is amazing and he puts a lot of time into adding dents/scratches to the plastic before painting!

I hope you don't mind my bothering you about pressure casting.

1. When resin is pressure cast and the bubbles are shrunk down, is the volume of the air inside the bubble actually being compressed inside the resin, or is the air being squeezed out of the resin and into areas inside the pot with less mass? The reason I ask this is because if the volume of the air really is being compressed inside the resin, wouldn't that make the resin extremely explosive if you were to accidentally (or intentionally) break the cured resin? Aren't they essentially air bombs?

2. What keeps the air pressure inside the pot during the curing time? What prevents a backflow into the compressor? Can the hose be removed from the pressure pot during the curing time without losing pressure? Or will the air escape in a sudden and explosive manner through the nozzle where the hose was connected?

3. Assuming the compressor tank and pressure pot are the same volume, and the compressor reads 60 psi, when you open the valve from the compressor, and the air enters the pressure pot, will the gauge on the pressure pot read 30 psi? Or does the full 60 psi somehow enter the pressure pot?

I am a complete amateur at this, and have never used a compressor in my life.

Thanks a lot for providing so much inspirational stuff! Your woodgrain tuto helped me so much on my first try to get this effect, even if I still far from your results.

I don't agree with that at all. Anyone can slap paint on something, the real skill comes in visualizing what you want to achieve while looking at a blank canvas. That's where the years of experience studying metals, oxidation, rust patterns, dirt, wear, manufacturing processes, assembly, and materials comes in. Your Futureish Assault Rifle shows that you had an idea that the main body of the rifle was the functioning, high end steel machined parts and the OD green sections were the lightweight, protective shrouds, housings, and high-impact, high wear sections such as the stock, grip and pump. The silver screws pull it together, and the extra black lined grime details in the cracks adds an extra level of realism and highlights some of the existing details that Hasbro put into the plastic. On top of that, you put more customization into it with the rail and accessories and hand painted skull/banner.Β

You know exactly what you're doing, and this is a really good piece.Β

You can always do a female version of a male Borderlands 2 character. That's a pretty normal cosplay thing these days.

I love to see people making props that go beyond pieces of plastic and spray pant and you seem to capture that better than most! Also yay for borderlands! I love that game! Thanks for the on my pic. Gotta say, though, as I look through your nerf mods I am truly impressed. Amazing work! Makes me feel a bit less excited about the simple paint jobs I did with mine.

Hypercats In reply to gavinpaulellis [2013-05-12 20:54:16 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I don't think you should feel any less excited about your paintjobs, though. There's nothing at all wrong with them. Simplicity works. Especially with the Maverick, it takes a lot of customization well. If you look through my "favorites" tab, there's some other great examples of simple paintjobs that are done well.

your welcome for the watch. i really like the work you did with the dmc necklaces. im planning my dante cosplay and i've been looking everywhere for that necklace. you have done a real amazing job.

Thanks! I'm surprised at how popular the new DmC character designs are. I just did the amulets because I also made the old Devil May Cry ones and wanted to take a crack at making the new ones. Hopefully I can make the new Rebellion one of these days too.

Sana-Shinto In reply to Hypercats [2013-05-14 01:28:16 +0000 UTC]

i was surprised at it too.... im only doing the cosplay because i have his natural features, and with the exception of the muscle shirt i already dressed like that...so i get to do a cosplay that i would feel comfortable wearing...for once lol. when you decide to take a whack at the new rebellion please let me know. i've been looking for someone to do make the new blade as well as his new guns. I haven't seen anyone do it..well....correctly to say the least...im a stickler for perfection. but i dont have any of the tools to do any of this myself. or else i would. so im really hoping for find someone who not only wants to make the weapons but who will also do it to the best of that persons ability. and someone who will also take time, do it right the first time, and have fun doing it. sadly i havent run into a single person who sees it that way..which i find odd. maybe im just being a stickler or something lol. Well if you get to do it. i got pictures and i also got a hold of the 3D model of rebellion through www.free3dmodels.com. but i've been unable to open them. idk why

I've seen people selling the new Ebony and Ivory, and they look pretty good for $150. I know I could add more details, but then it becomes a balancing act between the amount of time you put into it, what you think your time is worth, and how much people are actually willing to pay, especially if there are other comparable products. Rebellion looks like it could be fun to build. I should be joining a makerspace in about a week, and they have a 150w laser cutter that I need to play with.

Also, if you need models, use the XNA models and the Tomb Raider XNA model viewer. I think I was even able to export them to obj and mess around with them in 3D Studio Max.

Unfortunately, I found the models after I had made the necklace from screenshots and guesswork. :/

If you want to see people who are obsessed with getting the details right because they're huge fans, join therpf.com .
