That makes sense, yeah. If you don't mind answering, how long have you been an EMT? And do you have any advice for rookies?
I'm still in training, which was put on hold due to COVID-19. We're supposed to pick everything back up toward the end of this month.

I passed the NR Exam in February of last year when I was 19 but jokes on fucking me, in my county I have to be 21 to be hired as an EMT by AMR. Plus AMR looks for experience in their hires so I'm working as one of the emergency medial staff/normal staff for a camp in the mountains. I'm planning on being a transfer driver or ER assistant this fall. So, I don't have advice for the job itself besides what I learned through job shadowing (Which! By the way you can do at any point as many times as you like under your schools name. Take advantage of that if you can. Job shadow ambulances and ER's).
But as for school... ask how they'll be grading you in the NR exam and if you can have the sheet they use to grade you and study by that. Pay close attention to medical symptoms (especially anything with myocardial infarctions), study medical diseases associated with them (download EMT-B apps), write vitals on your gloves, learn the names of common medication ingredients (also apps for that), ---> NEVER FORGET SCENE SAFETY and BLS/PPE. <--- (I swear to mother Mary you will fail the NR if that isn't your immediate thought when beginning a scene. Practice by running through a trauma scene in your head with your dog sleeping on the floor. Pretend your first on scene, what are you looking for? What do you smell? Hear? Other patients? Other people there? Mechanism of injury? blahblah), and spend every day practicing by creating scenarios or downloading fake scenarios online. Run through them and do it over and over again until you can do it perfectly. AND DON'T FORGET THIS EITHER: you are transport. You are transport. You are not there to heal them, calm down the family, look at squirrels, or show off. You are there to grab that sob and go. Stabilize, TRANSPORT. And always think outside the box; if the patients in a small bath tub, who is going to be the one squeezed in to provide spinal support, you or your 110 4 ft coworker? Can I use the sheets of the bed to lift the patient up and onto the stretcher? When I roll this patient over to check for life threatening injuries I can put a back-board under them at the same time? And being am EMT is a social job, get used to being really uncomfortable and close to people by practicing on friends, family, and other students. That's all off the top of my head... being an EMT is fucking hell and the best thing so right on for picking it!
