Whereabouts is Longfords Mill? It looks like an interesting place to visit, or do you need permission?

Longfords Mills is up in Stroud,
Gloucestershire. Sadly you can not enter it but I am very lucky because my dad is an architect who drew up some of the building plans for the new houses around the area, so I had access to a key for a day! I really want to go back there to try some night time shots with flashes and lights, but I don't know if I will be able to get my hands on the key again.

Every time I get the train going north I think the same thing! It certainly looks as if it has amazing potential for a photo project. Unfortunately I've had to sell my Nikon DSLR owing to unemployment. However, I still have my 1/4 plate wood & brass, and the various pinholes.

Aw thats a shame about the Nikon! Although, I really do love the photographs that come out of your plate camera and pinholes! I bet you could do some amazing long exposures over there.

I haven't tried any negative processes yet, just prints i.e. Fox Talbot's salted paper print, van dyke brown (similar-ish to Kallitypes), cyanotypes, and gum bichromates. I've often thought about giving Talbot's calotype neg a try but it sounds quite complicated, although I'm sure there are teaching workshops available.

Gotta love salt prints! I want to try van dyke prints and gum bichromates too. I got a book about making calotypes for Christmas and it does look very complicated, but the outcome is amazing, hopefully one day I will master it! :]

I'm very much liking your latest batch of photos. The abandoned house reminds me of the Dr Who episode "Blink", the solarised pinholes are sort-of ethereal, and of course I like it that you are using vintage cameras.

You have a cool gallery Particularly interested to see that you employ old cameras and have tried out old processes like cyanotype (cyanotypes and the other hand-coated print processes are my faves!)

Thank you. I am liking your gallery too, some very nice pictures. Yeah I really enjoy using old cameras and processes and just film in general, I really want to start shooting 5x4 soon so that should be a fun challenge.

Thanks for the nice comments - I've made a pinhole camera for a 5x4" plate holder. Otherwise I use a cardboard box pinhole and 5x7" paper negs. The print "Lizzie, Mum, & Dad" is a VanDyke Brown print from a quarter plate film neg. You mix silver nitrate with Ferric Amonium Citrate, and then coat a sheet of paper and dry in the dark. Contact print the neg in sunlight, wash & then fix. If you want more info then you're welcome to phone 07817365804. Michael
