Do you ever take commissions?Β

If so how much for a sprite sheet?

Found some of your tutorials from your website and wanted to thank you (but with comments being disabled, I'll have to stalk you here ). Not only am I improving, but I've got the motivation again to work on my projects. Also, glad to see you're still around

I just wanted to say thank you so, so much for the inspiration. (And couldn't find an e-mail on your website, phbft.) You were the only one with an actually useful tutorial on Vector-to-Pixel that I could find ALL summer long-- and I just figured out last night, after being spurred on by your tutorial, how to export all the frames of an animation in Flash in a similar fashion! I thought you might be interested in it-- I hope it proves useful to SOMEone besides me.Β homestarrunnertron.deviantart.…

Many thanks, so glad to hear that such an obscure trick can be useful to people.
Definitely interested in things like Flash conversions and other non-typical ways to get art into pixels.

Hello !! it's me again and the last time you helped me a lot and now I have a little more experience and want to ask you again if you can give me a tip about the color process in an animation. I'm using your resizing methor but still It took me like an hour to finish a single frame... Im working on this:

imgur.com/SZO7aes

I hope you can read this and sorry for my bad english

Kiwi-RGB In reply to ayaiken [2014-08-02 20:12:34 +0000 UTC]

Do one thing at a time so you don't get overwhelmed. First, take each frame and give it shading by putting a light gray over it and leaving the light parts white. Watch the animation to make sure the shading is consistent and doesn't jump around each frame. When it's right, shrink the artwork to the size of the sprite, then use Photoshop's Index Mode to convert it to the right number of colors (try 4 or 5). Clean the pixels until everything looks right (this will take the longest), and then at the end, add the coloring to the grayscale image (this should be the quickest part).

Kiwi-RGB In reply to ayaiken [2014-04-25 02:02:40 +0000 UTC]

Very nice indeed. You have a good eye on the drawing, shading and pixeling details and all I can make are minor suggestions:

For highlights on the skin, make them as tiny as possible. The shoulder and chest are good, but the ribs and legs look too long. Also, keep them uneven to add dimension: give half of her ribs and only one of her legs a highlight.

You did the shading on her abdominal muscles perfectly. You made distinct, blocky shapes that take advantage of the squareness of pixels to make the edges nice and sharp. Try that with her face by giving her cheek a block of light and put her mouth and chin in shadow. That will add dimension to her face.

I think her left side of the ribs might stretch out too far, but that's a drawing issue. Don't worry about that for now, just focus on the pixeling and shading of your drawings.

Shading the legs is tricky because the most important part of this style is making the shape of the light patches interesting. The first thing you should do is make sure you don't use any perfectly straight 45-degree diagonal angles. Look at Ryu's legs and see how there's almost no perfectly straight diagonal outlines or light patches. That makes his legs look more organic and less like a robot. That's a trick that will always help you when doing characters. Make sure your shading always has at least a little curve in it instead of long diagonal areas.

Don't be afraid to put the lower half of her legs in all shadow. Those gray areas don't really need any light because that makes them pop out a lot. Maybe just a tiny bit to show reflection would be okay.

In the end, the rule to remember for this style is: Make the shape of your light areas simple but also interesting/not too straight

Ok I tried some things and posted about them in my scraps. Hope you like it and will try to finish some actual better stuff with gradients later. May be awhile though. Thanks so much for visiting and the + watch. Means a lot and hope to see you again.
Lol also I played tatio arcade collection on my birthday. Hope playing a few games will give me more ideas for how to go about shading with pixel art. Lol I'd be so broke if I was in the actual arcade, though I like those a lot too but over played the games now. XD
See ya.

Lol. Thanks a lot for the happy birthday. Will try to upload more soon but want it to look nice first like you say the art has to be good first too.
Have been trying those techniques in the thundercats tutorial and maybe I'll redo that ugly castle thing for a background try lol that would be interesting pixellated and would probably help the colors meh. XD

Ah, bienvenue Madame.. things not so hot on my end with a new job that's been asking a lot for a while. Getting some breaks, but my internet time's been either on someone else's computer or through a phone for the last few months. Trying to keep my pixel stuff going but haven't made anything in forever. How's you?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

chesney In reply to Kiwi-RGB [2013-08-07 06:02:42 +0000 UTC]

Really? Β What's the job? Β I might also be looking for work myself soon. Β Oh, I guess I'm doing okay. Β I'm definitely still drawing. Β I'm in the process of getting a new stamping website up, which is a project I'm really having fun with but isn't yet bringing in any money. Β One thing I'm noticing is that now that I'm devoting my all to my art as a job, I'm improving dramatically whereas before it always felt like a guilty side pleasure I was "wasting" time on when I should be doing something to bring in more money. Β And it turns out I'm not that bad at website design either! Β I'm looking forward to its launch.

I haven't seen you in my facebook feed for a while and I don't see you on my facebook friends list. Β I have a really sneaking suspicion I accidentally took you off one night when I got so fed up with facebook, I took out almost 2/3 of "friends". Β Whoopsie on my part! Β

It's a local ad agency that does a lot of print stuff like magazines/catalogs that run on deadlines. Lots of clients + small staff = way tons of overtime.

With art as a career, I'm completely the opposite. I could never draw for a living. That's my personal release valve, and if I ever had to draw characters that I wasn't interested in during a time when I just wasn't in the mood, it would turn my one consistent joy in life into a drain, which would be incredibly tragic. I don't know how all those career illustrators can just decide to be creative whenever they want.

Still, motivation does drive certain people, so you need to work with that if you've got it.

A not bad web design is enough to pique curiosity, so I'll be interested to see when the chance arrives..

chesney In reply to Kiwi-RGB [2013-08-08 04:52:01 +0000 UTC]

I thought the exact same thing about doing art as a living before I tried it (which I guess was back in 2006ish). It has its good days and it has its bad days. Fortunately with the stamp site I'm working on, I can draw pretty much what I want to draw, unlike commissioned art. Β It's hard for an artist to get paid drawing what they want! As for the website, I'll send some of the mockups I did in photoshop your way via facebook.
