I would never take resources from school! I would feel so bad. Plus the quality of the supplies weren't always that great.Β
Haha, I can totally imagine you getting out of Perth for other opportunities. And yea! South West Australia has so much biodiversity compared to other parts. We don't go on many excursions this year, but the following years I'm pretty sure we go quite a few camps. I'm really looking forward to those. Do you get anything like that in your course?

Hehe, I always took the coloured paper But, yeah the quality of the school resources are pretty bad (especially the paints and brushes).
We don't really go anywhere exciting...our field trips are to industrial places If we ever go to some nice nature area as an engineer it probably involves digging it up or something (kind of my predicament with the profession, but I guess if I become one then I can try doing it in the least harmful way). A camp in the south west sounds really fun, though.Β

Urg, the paints were horrible! I was so glad that in upper school we got to use some of the better stuff.Β
Ah, that sucks! And haha, thanks for that. Though many companies have 'biodiversity offsets' nowadays, meaning that if they do happen to clear wild habitat, they company has to contribute to restoring another area that would be the equivalent in $... though it's not exactly ideal because no two habitats are the same hence these areas are priceless, but I guess it's better than nothing. For example, my tutor was saying that an large portion of a banksia forest was getting cleared for some kind of development. There aren't many of these forests left so no matter what the company decides to do to 'offset', that matter of fact is that there is now one less banksia forest which has a domino effect on the species that rely on it. No offset can counter these actions. It's a really complicated issue since human interest is in constant conflict with the natural world. We need to expand, yet at the same time we have to try and conserve. The two don't exactly go hand in hand.Β
(Man, you can tell I get really passionate about this stuff.)

They save all the good stuff for those upper schoolersΒ Β
That was an interesting read. I agree that in the end it's not the same, but is better than nothing. I just don't know if it would work well...it must be a big problem for the animals. Do they relocate them or something if that even works? And the forests would probably have taken a long time to develop so putting a new bunch of trees somewhere else would be different. I don't really know lots about this stuff, but I hope they don't screw up Blergh...sometimes I wish we could kind of live along with nature more than try to force to our own purposes (damn that sounded so hippie). Unfortunately it is usually cheaper to clear the whole entire place than build around it

I'm not sure if they relocate the animals. And you're exactly right, replanting trees will never replace that old banksia forest. In fact, no matter that they do, it would never completely compensate.
Yea, lately the more I learn about biology and related topics, the more I start to think "man.... humanity is so stupid". Sure, we may have gone miles in terms of technological advances, but we can't even get along with our neighbour, nature. And people expect me to believe that we're intelligent? We're literally killing ourselves by harming the environment (we rely more on our surroundings than we realise), and we know this yet we do little or nothing. As one of my favourite quotes goes: "Only until all of mankind lives in harmony with nature can we truly decree ourselves to be an intelligent species". Yet voices who think alike are called exactly that, 'hippies' which obviously has a negative connotation so people are less likely to get involved. What's worse is that as this age, while we're still studying, I feel so helpless. It seems like it's going to be years before I actually begin attempt to make a difference.
... Why can't the world just get along D:Β

Agreed. As you said, humanity is really silly abusing the stuff we rely on. In the end we will only doom ourselves. As much as it sucks that there are many species who suffer because of the stuff we do, I think nature will go on and adapt. Not sure if we will...Β
I do think that we are quite intelligent, but we lack a heap of foresight and wisdom. We probably could find ways to live more in harmony, it's just too inconvenient and costly for many people to be bothered. But as you said earlier, it is a really complex issue which I find hard to entirely comprehend.
And I understand that feeling of helplessness, but I hope that mindsets will change with new generations and that the environment will gain more interest (I mean it does happen).Β

Couldn't have said it better myself. I think that's one of the big issues. It's too inconvenient to change our lifestyle.
*sigh* It's really depressing...

We all are. It's hard to get our of habits that we've been doing throughout our lives, and to get away from what we've see as being 'normal'.

Yobtaf In reply to Kqeina [2013-10-31 01:06:55 +0000 UTC]
I agree...it is hard. I think it would be a lot easier to identify the bad habits first (which can also be hard) and then find a way to fix them. I wonder what things we perhaps should start doing to make a change. Any ideas?

Kqeina In reply to Yobtaf [2013-10-31 03:46:08 +0000 UTC]
Not sure :/ The only idea I get is teaching the new generation differently... Give them different values so that we can break the cycle. But that in itself is pretty hard since we learn from our parents and society, yet they are unwilling to change. It seems to be an unbreakable loop. (Kinda like "I can't get a job because I don't have experience because I can't get a job because I don't have experience etc..."
