Your DevID is one of the nicer ideas for a portrait, it probably could have used just a little more fill light to bring out some contrast but it still works. Your digital images, especially those with people, looks like you used some of the Daz3 templates as your basis (I could be wrong). What I do notice right off with these digital images is that the female ones certainly have more energy to them, so I would assume you enjoy working on them more, and based on the details in both background and characters and your other works, I would like to see how you approach digital painting. I really think that could give your characterizations a more personal edge to them. I do like your regular photos the most, the portraiture is nice, though I think that trying some different backdrops would help bring some of the portraiture from good to excellent (Eve's Greatest Moment and Night Light I like very much). The HDR is also really well done, you obviously put some time into this and I was curious about whether it was done using filters or presets in PS or by taking multiple frames and using HDR software to merge them. It is often difficult to find decent backdrops, I know I have issues with that sometimes. Don't be afraid to experiment, step outside your comfort zone even if the experiment fails horribly, you've learned something. On Blogspot is a Blogzine called Strobist as well, they have excellent ideas on how to play with light. Hope this helps.

I really appreciate the info and feedback. And I will play around with adding fill light to the Dev ID to see what results I get. I was lit only by my two monitors for that shot so it’s difficult to increase their brightness.

Yes you are correct I do use Daz Studio but not Daz3 (I can’t afford it yet) I was fortunate to inherit a good library and I take advantage of vendor freebies when ever I can. I have been playing with the program for a couple of years now and I am starting to experiment with different effects. The female characters I am more comfortable with only because I have more clothes textures and the like for them. For most of my characters I have created them as a commission piece or for friends. I haven’t had a lot of request for male characters and maybe I should expand more in that area to make them look more energetic. As far as digital painting goes. I have no experience with the medium. I might be willing to try it more if I had a tablet and pen but it’s not something I am comfortable with by using a mouse.

The portrait pictures that you see are ones that I created while doing studio photography classes at the local community college. I hope someday to be able to afford my own light set but for now I am limited in my access to lighting.

I am glad that you liked the HDR I worry about those sometimes. And for 90% of those I do bracket 3-5 shots using my Canon XTi and a trusty tripod then I merge the pictures in Photomatix Pro and follow the process that is posted in the journal of [link] its on his last page under the heading of β€œHow do I create my HDRs?” I was doing the majority of what he describes but the post work I needed help with and his journal outlined a process that worked well for me.

I will check out the Strobist site soon. Thanks again for the great feedback!

I love Photomatix as well, one of the ideas I got from strobist in lieu of having studio lights was to use a pocket wizard and reciever with a gorillapod to set your detachable camera flash anywhere you want...I am playing with mini softboxes and snoots as well as gels for the flash to mixed success, so far. Another good tool for post production is plug-in suite 5 if it becomes affordable (I got lucky and got mine academically for 200 less....but being as I have a teacher's license now I can keep using for as long as I teach).

I have been selected to provide a critique of some of your work, did you want specific pieces critiqued or the whole gallery and would posting it here be ok?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MEandYouPhoto In reply to BAGilligan [2010-07-22 02:45:50 +0000 UTC]

I have two 3 types of work I do mostly. Photography, HDR and 3D Fantasy Art. I would like feedback on any one of those that you are comfortable with or all of them if you are so inclined. Specific pieces or the entire gallery is fine. I just want a fresh point of view and some feedback. I trust you to be professional but offer constructive feedback.

Thanks for taking the time.

I found your comment on manual settings for dslr tutorial, the one where you commented about his cracked screen looking a bit amateurish. I appreciated the mini critique, and figured I would see how your gallery was. I did it real late, just before bed. Sorry, I usually at least one comment.
Great gallery!

I remember making that comment. I think that was like a year or so ago! If I remember right my comment was as a result of a critique thread I ran on the thumbshare page. Do remember who that critique was for? I would like to take a look at his stuff again.

I am glad you liked my gallery and I really enjoyed yours as well. I have been slacking lately as far as posting new works but I am planning to add more soon.

Take care
