EchenaisBeneath the darkened waters
of ancient tides and streams,
lived the lovely Echenais;
lost in love-sick dreams.
Beneath the twinkling stars,
and the fickle moon above,
She laid her hopes upon a prince,
she longed for lust and love.
The mortal Daphnis found her
by the river she cared for so,
and underneath the weeping willow,
her love for him did slowly grow.
She laid with him beneath the stars,
and her loneliness did ebb away.
He promised her eternal love,
much to another maiden's dismay.
The daughter of a king, she was,
and longed for the mortal shepherd too;
and to the lovely Echenais,
the fickle Daphnis was untrue.
The water nymph was heart broken,
hearing of her lover's deceit.
She swore to be avenged;
she would not with another compete.
His mistress was a maiden fair,
her beauty was his one delight.
But he wronged the pure Echenais,
and for his betrayal, she took his sight.
