I primarily use Daz Studio and touch it up with (depending on what I'm looking for) Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop

Actually the website daz.com has some tutorials buried on it. Otherwise my first and only real tip to begin is: when learning stick with items and clothes made for the specific model. If you don't then it will get frustrating really quick as stuff doesn't line up or cover up correctly. Then from there doodle with the poses and morphs but do it subtly. Large exaggerations in posing or morphs can really kill the feel of the image
