Man, you have some real skill there. I can see you going far. Good luck with your job hunt, I havent really seen any design jobs going in auckland, but then again, im just a design student so not really looking atm.

actually you should. You should aim to try and at least get to know what firms are likely to hire, who to talk to and so on. At least bag a few name cards and personal contact numbers of the right people.

this is also the time where you try and start building your reputation by winning contests or taking commissions or showing off your portfolio to all the right people at the right time. and so on. Basically you're networking while studying (do aim to have solid skills before you start networking)

makes finding a job easier!

You can start with the lecturers!

Thats great advice, thanks! Yeah, i should probably work on finishing alot of the work littering my hard drive and desk and try put a decent portfolio together, and as somebody so helpfully pointed out earlier, i have no work online! Gunna have to work on that too lol I think my work is upto a semi solid standard, well, should be enough for deviant art anyway, not sure i'd want to show it to a big player in the industry just yet haha

Thanks again for the advice

You're welcome. Try and aim to be industry standard at the end of secand year and have some sort of portfolio pulled together.

then you can spent third year, putting the polish in your skills.

Jaala In reply to SuperBeanWorld [2009-04-27 13:18:18 +0000 UTC]

not really, actually i'mm still in my first year (but before that i was at a college. =.= can you say idiocy? well i was that in my previous college)

well here's the trick, know yourself inside out, i.e. your work habits, your current skill level and what's expected.

it helps if you know what to expect and where you need to improve. i.e. DO IT BEFORE THEY ASK YOU TO!- so that you won't have the worry of failing ON top of the pressures of having to complete the damn project.

and two, if you haven't done foundation yet, it's good idea to make sure your observational skills are pretty solid BEFORE you start class.

LAST AND BUT NOT LEAST.... (with the knowledge of how you work) plan your time. Work in a way which works for you...

like for me, i sometimes need a little procrastination time in which to allow ideas to "cook" alittle. So yeah, i sorta keep a-watch on the clock and leave a little leee way. (or try to. I'm terrible at keeping deadlines really) So for example you KNOW that you're horrible at coming up with ideas BUT have a decent set of technical skills, so you can take advantage of that by allowing more time for brain storming (and doing other things of course 8D). This also means that you can rush projects pretty well.

Yeah, if you're a perfectionist this motto should help you: sometimes you have to say: SCREW PERFECT! I'm going to just finish the damn project.

Another thing is don't waste (too much of) your time complaining, it doesn't help at all. (and usually jams up your creative process) Just SUCK IT UP! and do your work. You can complain afterward when the project is over....

Also, another trick which helps is that when i'm bored or have nothing to do (but cannot physically do anything like when waiting for the bus or stuck in a stuffy lecture etc), i set my brain to thinking of ideas for my assignments/projects; i.e. what to do, how to do it and so on.

And so i don't waste too much time phaffing around wondering what to do. Basically any time you're not required to concentrate on something.

Okay, To boil down my long winded pomposity:

1)KNOW YOURSELF AND WORK HABITS
2)EFFECTIVE TIME MANAGEMENT (it is EVIL i know but very necessary)
3)Find creative ways to shorten your work process (in order to output your project)
4) LEARN AHEAD. (at least the theory part of it. >.> sometimes it's rather overwhelming when confronted with a new tool or software. Usually you're expected to use this tool and use it well, despite it being the first time you've seen it. And you're graded. So if you know the theory, it's alot easier on you)

well cheers and g'luck!
