I think I might not be the right person to ask. My own artistic abilities is ghastly, at best.
But if you would like my opinion as a layman, background needs to compliment the picture and provides a narrative for the piece. Composition and layout are a complicated study, different types would work for different purposes. For example, although portrait pieces traditionally adopt a front and center composition, a slightly off-center layout will also work on some occasions. The best thing to learn is by trying out different things in your style and see what effectively communicates your points across.
