# About me
Yo, I'm Sergio Andraevich Evangelista, and I'm an apathetic perfectionist.I'm still a complete rookie at art, but I'm trying to develop a style that I really can call my own. I'm not looking for something innovative, and I don't want it to look like an altered replica of someone elses work, but rather a style to which I can attach myself and the subjects I like to draw. It's still in rough development, but I'm learning from the works of other great artists and I really want to hear your personal opinions.

Hey, I want to thank you for advising me to watch Angel Beats if I want to become a better writer and/or storyteller. It was quite a new experience to me. I mean, I cried more often when I watched this than when I watched The Green Mile.
It has an interesting and touching way of storytelling. However, I don't know how you can make someone cry while reading a book. Honestly, I never cried while reading a book. I did cry once when I read some Manga and I did cry at series like Gurren Lagann, Angel Beats and the first Bleach movie. So, in other words, do you know how to make a touching story (without visuals) that can make people cry?
BTW: I have posted a new story on my DA account.

No problem, it's quite a powerful show, right? I'm glad you liked it.
As for writing touching stories: It mostly involves practice and reading / watching lots of stories. When you watch a show, try this exercise: When they get to a particularly climactic scene, or just any scene you find touching or beautiful, try writing that exact scene down on paper. Like when you see angel playing a piano, just write down something like "she sat down before the ebony instrument and her wings jetted behind her as she began to play," etc. etc.
Another fun writing exercise I like to do is to write down a short story, or a few small poems, and to revisit them every few weeks after I've practiced more or experiences new stories. You'll spot flaws in your own writings from before and think of ways to fix your own works and make them more powerful.
Other than that you just have to understand how attach people's emotions to your characters. If you're writing a story about a girl and you say something like "She died gruesomely," of course it's a little sad and uncomfortable for the reader. However, if you can truly make us love a character ANY event can become twice as sad and dramatic for us. The goal is to not have to rely on horrific scenes of blood and death to draw out emotions, but to be able to make us fear what's going to happen to the girl, how the character will be hurt emotionally and spiritually by something, as opposed to physically. Physically is, of course, a very strong form of pain, but it's shallow and is best left to visual mediums.
To truly feel for a character we need to love his personality and he needs to have a realistic back story that is visibly present in his character.
Two final exercises I'd recommend to you in developing character attachment:
1) When you read / watch a good story try to think of the character's psychology and back story. Notice how the character's history is actually a vivid part of himself. Angel beats is a perfect story for this kind of practice.
Two examples: (careful, spoilers if you haven't finished the show)
A) Yurippe, from Angel Beats, became a strong and confident leader to "repent" for her previous "failure" as a leader. She's a character that represents the "second chance" theme of the show very strongly. She also developed the will to fight back against impossible opponents (as shown when she is constantly opposing Angel) after hating herself for simply obeying and not fighting against the burglars. She also seems to have only a vague attachment to her new friends, treating them sarcastically and hitting them at will (perhaps a response to the trauma she faced from losing someone so close?). What other traits as a leader did she developed in response to her weakness in the previous life?
B) Noi, the student council vice-president in angel beats, experiences a very strict and controlled life. He felt powerless over himself and his entire fate was decided for him. As such, in the after life he eagerly steps up to become the president of the student council-- a position in which he has the most power of anyone in the show. He also develops other traits that represent his desire for control and influence over others (his hypnosis). He's a very emotionally fragile character and wants someone to look up to (Otonashi). Perhaps this could have been developed when his father fell ill and finally regarded him as someone important?
2) This one is a lot more personal and difficult, but definitely very valuable if you want to understand emotional attachment. Try observing your closest friends and family or people who are otherwise important to you. Try to figure out their back story without specifically asking them. Think of why the could have developed the traits they did. Perhaps a really manly man or father figure to you could have been weak or fragile as a child and seeks to change that about himself. Maybe a really caring person in your life has suffered trauma and was cared for by someone kind. That person could have looked up to the person who saved them and wished to be just like them. etc. etc.
Hope this helps, good luck!

Well, I have watched all the episodes of Angel Beats since I posted my comment on your account, so you don't have to worry about spoiling everything
I see, so I cried because I felt very attached to several characters? Sounds logical to me I mean, I really liked the developed and more non-flat characters (Otonashi, Hinata, Yui, Yurippe and Kanade).
I mean, IMO, Yurippe has a very realistic character. You know all those anime series and American movies in which the main character sacrifices everything from itself to save his beloved ones OR else he's no better than the big bad? To be honest, I don't really think which path I would choose if I had to choose between letting someone be killed or letting myself getting tortured and heavily mutilated (cutting off *gulp* everything). I mean, if Yurippe had the strong will of characters like Kamina, Simon the Digger or any Samurai-esque character, she would ran towards the burglars and using her own body as a shield in order to let her siblings escape.
But she didn't have that strong super-sacrifice will because she was weak and scared of the monsters - just like how any children or adults would feel. She blamed herself, and she tried so hard to defy 'Angel' and 'God'. Just like you said, her great struggle made me attached to her.
Otonashi, on the other hand, is a very selfless person, but even he has desires. You know what happened the end of episode 13 - Otonashi's heart was broken.
But it wasn't only 'being attached to the characters', but also empathising with the character's situations (losing a beloved one or hearing a confession of love). The music also helped the tearjerker moment a lot.
You know, I will follow your advise !
But since I've received some birthday presents yesterday (yesterday was my birthday - to make it more obvious XD), I can't do it right away because I'm planning to read the first book of Sanderson's Mistborn Trilogy and watch Howl's Moving Castle. I am also planning to watch the two Gurren Lagann movies and to watch FMA and Eureka 7.
Thank you for your reaction
PS: would you like to read my most recent story 'My Soul Mate', please? And if you're reading it, could you also post your opinion on it, please?

I want to study in psychiatric research and become a therapist after I retire. There's a lot of corruption in the field that I really want to protest against, but I won't be taken seriously until I establish a name for myself.
What about you? Have you got any ideas for a career after high school?

Excellent, because that's really the biggest selling point to colleges. There are lots of stories where kids with like 1.2 gpas in low-income areas get full scholarships to USC and such schools because of the skill of their essays. Practice lots even if you're confident!
