I'm just sitting here grinning and rereading this message. Thank you so much! You have no idea how happy that makes me

I'm so glad I can inspire someone to not give up! You're a lot better than I was three years ago. Hell, I only started drawing with any regularity and seriousness when I was 15. You've got a head start on me! Keep it up

Ahdwdw thank you! I've got really into a more painted style recently, so Chevalier du Ciel is my first test of a fully painted piece (I DID draw lineart for it at the start as guidelines, but it's not on the final image.)

I honestly love your style - it's so smooth and gorgeous! My drawing style always tends towards being loose (messy), and according to my life drawing tutor I was the one person in the class whom you could hear me drawing across the room. But he did also say I was one of the best at judging and reproducing shade and tone, so I'm happy. I find clean lineart more trouble that it's worth, so I generally give up on it. Hence the move towards painting... which still looks good when it's messy

Muruni In reply to Sakkeru [2016-08-06 19:19:12 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome! I'm glad this made you happy (:

Yup, I'm definitely going to keep working on my art!

Painting is really fun! I think Chevalier du Ciel is a great first test as a fully painted piece. You should try more painting in the future! And there's nothing wrong with starting out with guidelines, a lot of artists I know use them when painting, haha.

Ah, thank you so much for your kind words <3
Same, I love being loose and messy so I have a lot of trouble with lineart. I never do lineart and just start painting with a sketch, haha. I just refine my messy painting until it looks like a neat painting. That aside, shade and tone are important parts of art, so it's awesome that you're good with it!
Anyways, if you enjoy loose and messy styles, then painting is the way to go ;D

woooohoooo hell yeah

Comic artists once again prove to be the friendliest artists of all.

No problem - been sorting out my watchlist (I was watching 500+ people - cut that down to about 200, going to do the rest soon) and I thought I'd find some new people to follow.

Actually, I was looking through Mad's gallery for something and came across the laser broom, and then I had to read Nextuus to try and find what kind of comment ended up producing such a thing, but then I got sucked into reading it because it's P DAMN COOL and yeah

who know laser brooms could lead to new friends? I'd invest in it.

as for what I'm working on, it might be nothing, but then again it could be something. My last attempt at a comic proved somewhat short-lived, but I'll probably try again. Comics are just so fun. Please always feel free to drop me comments without warning if you like!

Comic artists is good people.

Ah, the laser broom. That's all Mad's genius. I have yet to work it into the story, but by god-- it's bound to happen! Glad that you got hooked on the comic. It's always a thrill to hear from people who take the time to read it

Comics are totally fun! I would recommend anyone who wants to to make their own comic. It's a great hobby! I'll definitely poke through your gallery and leave comments as I can

Dey is innit

You just gotta love Mad.
I can imagine One-15 disguised as a cleaning robot and suddenly... WHOOMF LASER BROOM.

Yup, I am as you say, "hooked". I like the way you do panels on a black background: there's so much more versatility with layout, and less trouble with fitting speech bubbles where they're not covering up anything important.

They are! I'm currently sketching a few pages to see how far I get, and if it seems solid I'll start posting them. I don't want to get into the same troubles with posting schedules that I got into before (namely I couldn't keep up with any kind of schedule) so I want a decent buffer first. It'll probably be linework only if it's anything at all, because I am very prone to getting sucked into perfecting minor details no matter what I'm doing, so not even risking it this time.

Oohoo, I'm all excited now

NyQuilDreamer In reply to Sakkeru [2016-05-01 16:27:46 +0000 UTC]

Glad you like my layout! It started as a side-effect of drawing the pages on grid paper, but I really like making pages that way. And it is handy to have space to put the speech bubbles in! Sometimes I feel like it's a little lazy, but heck- it works for me!

Don't let yourself get too hung up on schedules to start-- I didn't have ANY schedule when I started Nextuus. I just posted a couple pages each month. It took some time to get up to 3 pages a week. And NOW I'm JUST STARTING to get a buffer filled!

Not saying that's the way you should do it, but it's okay to figure out the schedule as you go

What kind of story are you planning to make?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sakkeru In reply to NyQuilDreamer [2016-05-01 19:02:59 +0000 UTC]

Neat! I always say there's laziness and there's avoiding unnecessary difficulty. I personally always have trouble with speech bubbles - I generally draw as little and as small as the page requires, so that I'm not drawing anything I don't need to and I have more room to play with the layout. But then I have much less room to put speech... Still working on that.

Yeah, when I was drawing Terra Magica, I really put myself at a disadvantage by not thumbnailing or planning ahead as well as deciding to colour everything (which was a fair decision as colour and shading were my fortés but boy did it take ages) but I found that even a page per week schedule meant that I thought I had loads of time and then ended up drawing everything at the weekend. And once I started dropping schedules, it never really recovered. I either need a tight deadline to motivate me, or no deadline at all. It's like running with someone behind you: even if it's not a race and they're no faster than you are, you still feel like you're being pushed forwards. At least, I do anyway, and I feel the same if I'm drawing and posting simultaneously, like I can't stop for a moment or the comic will catch me up. Then I get stressed and can't draw at all, and that's how my last attempt at a comic died (though admittedly I did have exams at the time.)

I dunno, I just wanna draw it for fun, and possibly have huge gaps where I don't draw at all, and that's easiest to do if I only post it once there's a significant buffer.

But maybe not, and I'll just get impatient and post it anyway. After all if I can get five pages done, then I can post them once a month and have five months to spare, which would definitely be easier on my nerves.

"Planning." Well. When I've tried to write stories before, I always end up trying to figure out the small details before moving on, but that's like drawing a face and trying to perfect one eye before sketching the rest. So I'm not planning anything I don't have to, to avoid getting stuck.
Roughly, I'm planning to stick five characters from three partial stories into one and seeing how it goes. (Hopefully it'll be interesting, as that makes two from a scifi-ish setting and two from a fantasy setting, as well as two extras.) Since they've all been created at different times, my designing style has varied, and because they're not all designed for the same setting, I get the kind of variation I wouldn't usually. I'm hoping it'll work, and if it doesn't - well, it'll be good drawing practice.

NyQuilDreamer In reply to Sakkeru [2016-05-08 02:26:05 +0000 UTC]

Well, I'm excited to see whatever you cook up, and at whatever speed you settle on.

Having a buffer (for the short time I have) has been nice, but I still have to draw as often as if I didn't have it, to maintain it. Maybe it would be better to start out without one for you? So then your story only progresses when you make the next page. That worked for me-- it was (is) good motivation to know that if I didn't get my page done, I'd miss an opportunity to tell my story.

Of course, that's just what worked for me. I guess a better thing to consider is WHY you want to make comics. If you're just doing it for fun, then maybe finding the least-pressure way to do it is best.
