Hats start at $15, but ones with long ears (like Terriermon) are $25, Extra!long ears are $30. I take requests!
As far as hoodies go you can either get a modified hoodie or one from scratch.
Scratch Pros- Generally look better, more can be done with them, I always have access to the materials.
Scratch Cons- More expensive (Start at $70)
Modified Pros- Cheaper (start at about $50, and usually don't go over $80)
Modified Cons- Less can be done with them, and it may take a while to/ may not be able to find the right color base hoodie at the right price, added pieces won't match exactly, (but won't look bad).
Hoodies from Scratch (NOT MODIFIED HOODIES) also have the option of custom measurements (instead of just general mens/unisex hoodie size) to ensure fit.
General outline for measurements I'd need are;
Chest circumference (as loose as you want the hoodie)
Top shirt seam to how long you want the hoodie
Butt circumference (if hoodie goes down that far)
Bicep (as loose as you want the sleeve there)
Top shoulder seam to where sleeve ends
Products are machine wash cold, gentle cycle, but do NOT put them in the dryer or they will pill.
$10 hoodie shipping anywhere in US, $20shipping to canada. overseas is +$30 for hoodies.

did you ever particularly not want your picture taken? If so, how does one get over it?

Usually I don't mind my picture taken, but there are some instances I don't want it. If people are polite and ask to take my picture, I let them (I AM in costume, and that's part of the fun of being in costume). If i'm in a hurry, I tell them I'm sorry, but they can if they see me later.
If they take a candid shot and I see it, I tell them that wasn't polite (because the unspoken rule at cons is that you ALWAYS ask a cosplayer before taking their picture. Cosplayers like a warning so they can smooth out their costume and pose, we usually don't like pictures where we're nose deep in a double cheeseburger with ketchup on our face) Most people who take candid shots don't know they're being rude, they're just too shy to go up and ask the cosplayer. If the picture is particularly bad, I ask them politely to delete it, and i pose for them so they can have another one. I've never had someone in this situation who refuse to delete a picture.
And then you get the creepers......Which I will get confrontational with. Creepers are the rude people who forget you're a person because you're in a costume. And creepers are becoming a problem in the community due to how cosplay is becoming mainstream and that we're getting a decent number of girls who want to feel popular and therefore LIKE the attention creepers give them. Creepers treat you like an object. They make inappropriate sexual comments. They get in your personal space. They ask for overtly sexual poses, if they even ask at all (many creepers do the 'subtle' boob or ass pic with their cameraphone). This behavior is mainly directed at attractive or scantily clad female cosplayers, but nonsexual female cosplayers and crossplayers and females in general are targeted to a lesser degree. If you see a creeper or get creeped on, you get RIGHT up IN THEIR FACE,Β if you act like a victim you will be a victim, you need to convey that this kind of behavior will NOT be tolerated in your community (and chances are many people around you will agree). Tell the Con staff, or Con Security. If they took an inapropriate picture of you and won't delete it, all the more reason to talk to staff or security, if they're any good at all the picture will be evidence that the guy did something wrong.Β
They key is communication. Most people are very understanding and nice when it comes to someone not wanting their picture taken. If someone does take your picture when you didn't want it, confront them, most of the time they will understand. On the odd chance that you happen to encounter an incredibly rude dude-bro creeper, first tell them no politely, and if they don't listen, be very vocal about you displeasure. The best way to get inappropriate behavior to stop is to show that it won't be tolerated and contact the people in charge after the incident happens.

Sometimes I feel like most of my friends are more like my patients and I'm their mental therapist... but anyway...Β the question I wanted to ask is how can I really cosplay if I'm dark skinned and don't look relatively like anybody?

Its usually a sign of trust if your friends come to you to talk about their problems, but some just like drama.
I'd say just do it. Pick a character you like and dress up. You can't change your skin color, and most people understand that. There are many cosplayers who play characters who are a different body type, height, or gender than they are, and that works out fine. There are always some mean people no matter where you go, but I'd say the majority of the community just doesn't care.
I've played characters who are obviously not white. Ranma 1/2 (Chinese), Radical Edward.... I don't know what she is, but it's obviously not white. Many, if not most of my characters are Asian, and I am obviously not. I'm actually thinking about making Storm (a black woman) from Xmen, (because she's my favorite 
And if you think about it, most anime/manga characters are Asian anyways. When I started cosplaying back in 2007 white cosplayers were still getting harassed because 'only asians can cosplay', a problem that has all but ceased due to how many white people there are cosplaying asian characters. I know there's some blogs on tumblr specifically dedicated to dark skinned cosplay if you feel like looking.
