Originally, yeah, that was the idea. It was to be the codename of a character in a story I was working on (spy fiction). I wound up abandoning the project.

so you like Ensiferum. metal group.
how profound is metal music, in general? i feel the titles are death-doom, with lyrics of usual little substance. but depends i guess.

Sigma-Echo-Seven In reply to ersatz-moon [2013-05-17 04:03:26 +0000 UTC]

Depends on the metal. I don't really get into the heaviest of black metal, but I have friends who love that stuff. It's all about what hits you at your core.

Ensiferum is great because they're Finnish folk metal, so much of their music is about viking culture and Norse warriors and honor and whatnot. It's fun to listen to! Their song "Lai Lai Hei" is taken almost entirely from the Kalevala, a collection of Finland's myths and folklore: [link]

Then you have metal like Dethklok, which is death metal that's so over the top, and so AWARE that it's over the top, it becomes hilarious. Their brutality is used intentionally for the comedy of how brutal it is. Like this fan favorite song, "Birthday Dethday": [link] . My favorite Dethklok song is actually "Murmaider II," which is clearly inspired by the writings of H.P. Lovecraft. It's about a cursed underwater beast that takes control of the creatures of the ocean to strike terror into the hearts of gods: [link]

Some metal has a narrative it tells, like doom metal band The Sword. Their third album "Warp Riders" takes place on a distant planet that is tidally locked, causing one half of the planet to be burnt in perpetual sunlight and the other half to be covered in permanent night. It follows the story of an archer in exile, who finds an ancient artifact and sets out on a dangerous adventure across the world: [link]

There's also progressive metal like Animals as Leaders, who are entirely instrumental. I saw them live just a couple of months ago, they were great! [link]

Even though I do love metal, I like listening to other stuff too. I try and keep an open mind about things. [link]

damn, youtube doesn't really work around where i live. i'm quite intrigued by your mentioning Dethklok though, haha. i just tend to feel like slow music is more spiritual and profound than fast music, and similarly soft subtle music may transcend more of the consciousness/poetic/anima than loud music can. do you feel these notions, or are they complete bias on my part?

Sigma-Echo-Seven In reply to ersatz-moon [2013-05-19 14:49:19 +0000 UTC]

I think there's some truth to that, but I've heard some absolutely breathtaking fast-tempo music. For example, take The Sword's song "Barael's Blade" off their first album Age of Winters. It's probably my favorite one of that whole album because of its opening ferocity. Many metalheads enjoy metal because of the sense of energy it ignites within them. There's something essential about the power behind good metal; it's all about finding what ignites you.

haha Barael's Blade sounds pretty progressive to me, djenty instrumentals. do you like protest the hero? quite a progressive-metal band.. i like wordplay, and they definitely have something there as in lyrics-wise.

just wondering how old are you, whether you major in literature.

you say you are interested in kinesthesia and physicality, yet also in sublimity. my understanding of sublimity is the Sublime Self as in spiritual.

read some of your writing, am deeply impressed and humbled, and have added you to my devWATCH. you'll be one of those that i actually 'watch' on here from now on.

i'd enjoy some discussion about writing, or life in general.!

I'm graduating soon with a degree in English, actually. I love literature.

Sublimity often gets associated with spirituality, but I view it as more than that. It's something beyond our perception, beyond the very edge of what we are able to understand or rationalize. It exists out there, and we only ever see small glimpses of it. It's huge and beautiful and intoxicating and terrifying and awesome. That's what interests me. I'm going to lose myself to it someday.

Thank you kindly for the +watch, I'm deeply honored. Note me if you ever feel like talking!

ersatz-moon In reply to Sigma-Echo-Seven [2013-05-17 16:35:34 +0000 UTC]

yet some say that sublimity is bullshit and mankind can only rely on rationalism and objective reasoning to attain the factual truth of the world and our own beings..

I think such people may have an issue seeing the wonder of the universe. Science and the exploration of knowledge is great and all, but think about how much more we don't yet know about this place in which we live. Space stretches on to virtually infinity, and we've explored a grand total of less than 75% of the world's oceans. And this is just one world!

I think the reason I love science so much is because it's a natural expression of our curiosity as a species. We know there's more out there yet undiscovered, and we want to find it. We may never actually grasp the whole thing--as finite beings, I doubt we're capable of omniscience--but we can still obtain small fragments that improve us and astonish us. Sublimity =/= ignorance. Rather, science = an acknowledgment of the sublime's existence, and the impulse to say "Show us more."

people tend to have a stereotype of scientists as unfeeling, emotion-lacking maniacs who can't appreciate life.. but like you said scientists are sensual too because of their natural manifestations of humane curiosity. i like your notion of science being the acknowledgment of sublimity's existence. in that aspect, poetry and art are also sublimity in free-form.. life is living the sublimity, poetry in motion.

Yeah, I kinda liked that about it. I was watching a talk he gave on Youtube about ways to foster creativity, and then I found that quote of his explaining just how much choosing the creative path meant for him, even though he'd consciously denied himself a normal life. And he was ok with that. Gives me hope.
