It was a lot of fun. I thought Rachel would have told you. The pictures are all over my Facebook. The food was the best part. They also had vending machines on EVERY STREET CORNER. I think that may have something to do with the fact that very few restaurants sold large drinks. I also had to translate for them. They were really surprised to find how proficient I am in Japanese.

Like I said, it was actually pretty good. But we had the problem of constantly choosing weird tasting vitamin water instead of normal water from them. And my brother in law and I really love soda with Asian food, so we had a lot. The sodas from those machines were either bottles, or super-tall cans!

Yeah. We were actually near that famous shrine with the traditional market in front of it, and we went to a side road that had a lot of even MORE tradition shops, and we came across some tourists who spoke English. Our conversation went like this:
Me: We love the food, and we really want to try Ramen, but we can't eat pork.
Tourists: "Burst into laughter."
We also went to a SUPER traditional restaurant where they have people play the Shamisen for us as we eat. They were really surprised to find out that I knew what that was. (It's like a Japanese banjo.) Once again, they were really amazed about how much of the culture and language I knew.
We thought it was going to be really awkward when we came in and found out that the other table was taken by a bunch of old women in kimonos. One of them actually recorded the performance on her cell phone, which had a cell phone keychain! The people were super nice, and practically treated us like family. Apparently Michael Jackson's mother had eaten there. Ironically, my sister Miriam was the one who picked the restaurant, and she was the only one who couldn't stand the food. It was the only part of the place she didn't like though. My brother in law and I really did enjoy it. It was the only place where we got legit sushi, because we were worried about food poisoning. And yes, we brought soda in with us, and it was the perfect companion to the food. XD

dude, u just wrote, like, an entire novel. lol!!
That sounds super amazing!!! And oh my gosh, when you were talking about the shamisen and said it was like a japanese banjo, i pictured some old redneck guy in a kimono playing an old banjo!! XD

That's exactly why I don't like using that analogy, but it was the only way I knew how to describe it since they're so similar in structure.
Also, I don't remember whether I'm repeating myself when I say this, but I explained to my sister and brother-in-law what some of Japan's more unique fashion senses are, specifically Harajuku and Gal fashion. My brother in law kept on pronouncing it as Harekuju and pointed them out whenever he saw them. We actually saw a really old woman dressed like that in this clothing store called uniq-lo, which is getting locations in New York City btw.
Another thing, a lot of the stores had really weird names. Uniq-lo (Unique-Low--my sister had read about it online before and wanted to check it out) sounded cool, but most of them were meant to sound like western terms, but were just gibberish. The only one that made sense (that I can remember) was G-U. I explained to them that it was a Japanese pun, as jiyuu is the Japanese term for free.

Lol, all the stores and fashions sound so cool! and I love some of the Gal fashions, i saw some in my cousin's "A Geek in Japan" book thing-y. they're cool looking! Oh! and store names! Have u heard the japanese version of victoria secret is called "peach john's" or something like that? lol, so awesome!

Lol, we didn't see any underwear stores. We also saw Shibuya Crossing and an underground subway/shopping center. Stationary was also really big there. We saw several places for it. My sister and brother in law were on their way to a destination wedding, so they stopped for about a week in Tokyo, which is why I could go. Since it was a destination wedding, they didn't have to get presents, but they did get them a wedding card they found in one of the shops.
One of the stationary stores actually sold pens with brush-tips, for traditional-ish calligraphy. Since that's how you write Farsi, we got some for our family members.

We'd have to be careful in Shinjuku and Harajuku. I can imagine how put-off she'd be by Harajuku fashion and echi anime posters. That is something we came across, btw. My brother thought it would be cool to check out the bargain electronics markets to barter for some cool stuff, and one that we went into had a bunch of computers with these super-creepy screensavers. They were all images of scantily clad, nearly naked anime girls.
It was just....
The crepes we bought made it better though.
