It is a worthy cause, but the thing to remember is that there are so many. And with equal weight.
Lots of dA members are adults, who were young and as incensed as you are now by stories of Cambodia's Khmer Rouge ( [link] ), and there is always some humanitarian horror going on somewhere on the African continent, not to mention political and religious regimes and wars in the East.
We get filled up, to the brink of not being able to get all riled by one more story.
There really is nothing new under the sun, and when a young person spams with it and acts as if it is a new level of horror, we just get tired, sad, and angry.
And the younger crowd is fast going to that state of jadedness too.
The best thing you can do, it to not annoy. And plase realise, that posting about something on some internet forum is not the same as fighting for a cause. It is insulting to those who actually fight for causes, putting in hours and hours, week, yes even years of their lives. Doing actual work.
If you can do something in roughly 5 minutes, safely without any risk to yourself, and not even have to leave the comfort of your chair, you'd better believe it isn't fighting for a cause, nor very effective in any way.

You are right. I am young and these atrocities are new to me and perhaps I have not been desensitized to them. So then I would ask…What should be done? What is an appropriate response because doing nothing seems less than appropriate.

If you really want to make a difference, there's pretty much only the hard and/or slow and/or at times boring way: Starting by joining interest organizations (political etc.), and working with what they need you to do.
Maybe start locally. Also maybe donate money.
But always, always be critical: There are scammers out there, and they'd love to take your money. Don't so much trust little cool-looking and brand new websites, but go for established organizations in stead.
It'll be less fast paced, less glamorous, and there'll most likely be less of that WHOOP ACTION!!! feeling about it, but it'll actually have a chance of working over time.
When this viral internet-hoopla has died down, and most people gotten bored and moved on, the people who are in it for real keep working. If you want to be one of those, seek them out.
Amnesty International is a grand place to start. They also (as far as I remember) work with other organizations. Those are more likely to be real as well.
