# About me

I lost the password to both my old account and my old email address, so here I am.

MISCELLANEOUS FACT ZONE
-Centaurs, unicorns, horses, and other graceful hoofy beings are my favorite creatures to draw.
-I should probably paint more.
-Wanna talk about Transformers (mainly More Than Meets The Eye)? I’m secretly obsessed.
-There’s a little piece of pencil lead embedded in my right hand. It’s the source of my artistic powers! (No, it’s not)
-I spent a year in Osaka teaching English, learning Japanese, and playing cello. Hit me up for top secret hiking trail information.
-Education: B.A. in music and art. Current job: working at a department store and teaching English lessons. Hey, my degree isn’t useless! I’m saving up for grad school…
-My old accounts are andalasur and Valkeus in case you want to e-stalk me.
-I’m slowly writing the Great American Fantasy Novel. (I think a lot of us are.) I started my first draft when I was 9. It's significantly less terrible now.

deviantART-related info:
-I love helpful comments and critiques! I always return detailed comments on my art.
-I've been on and off deviantART since 2005. You can see my archives at andalasur (2005-2008) and Valkeus (2012-2013).
-I don't always give watch for watch, but I do return detailed comments! I tend to watch people back if they give detailed feedback.
-You can tag me in a journal, but I'll either decline or just answer the questions without tagging anyone else. No chain letters, please.
-Trades, commissions, and requests are closed for now, but I'll open them later when I have time.

Hey, Valkeus. I haven't heard from you since May 2016. Please come back to DeviantArt.

I also want to tell you that Rainforest the wolf is now 20 years old and Dinah the badger is now 18 years old. The two got back to dating each other since the 7th of January.

On the 12th of August, Rainforest proposed to Dinah (asking her to marry him) and she happily said yes. The two are now engaged and will get married on Valentine's Day 2021.

Valkeus-and-Varya In reply to Hethalos [2015-04-23 13:36:05 +0000 UTC]

More hours at work and trying to finish yard work before the spring. There's also my unfortunate tendency to drop by dA, get intimidated at all the messages, and think "yikes! I can't deal with this!!!" and run away :/

Hethalos In reply to Valkeus-and-Varya [2015-04-23 23:52:53 +0000 UTC]

Whenever I have a shit load of work, I elect one target initially. After a while, they'll get resolved. Of course, there are some practical limitations and I do know that popular online personalities can sometimes get hundreds of feedback messages per day.

In any case, answering messages via mobile devices whilst using the washroom or before going to bed are not bad ideas.

Good ideas

I agree that picking one thing to focus on really does help, especially since achieving one goal gives me renewed confidence to work on others. I always feel like I don't have time for dA, because there are technically many more urgent or important things for me to do, but somehow when I am active on this site it makes me happier and more productive at other things.

I'm not super popular, just super easily intimidated by messages and e-mails in general :/ Ah, to have that glamorous problem, though!

Hethalos In reply to Valkeus-and-Varya [2015-04-26 03:53:40 +0000 UTC]

Same here. I sometimes put off answering messages on my dA especially when I'm at university because I have other more urgent or important things, such as playtesting and designing my own board games. So far, I have been able to nail an excellent combat system for my current design project, "Eldritch", so that's a good accomplishment. I'm sometimes distracted by rolling dice, because I love picking up 36d6 and rolling them to represent a massed attack by weak infantry against a hopelessly powerful foe, and I also love emulating some combats/firefights between Terran Tanks and some random enemies from the Planetfall tabletop miniature game.

Are you going to publish your game? I'm sure there's some way to get it out there and into people's hands.

I don't feel compelled to roll dice, but my husband does, and he thinks it's honed his dice-rolling skills. Not sure if it works that way, but practice surely can't hurt

Hethalos In reply to Valkeus-and-Varya [2015-05-02 01:07:07 +0000 UTC]

Apologies for the late reply. Working around the clock six days a week is no easy feat. I am planning on getting my board game, Eldritch, along with a couple more future game ideas published digitally. Printed board games get too little exposure, although if I can still can get them printed, that would be great.

As far as rolling dice is concerned, I mostly do it because it's fun, and not to practice anything. As a joy-sucking mathematician who reduces stochastic games down to cold numbers, I find it's a lot more efficient to learn at least mid-level probability theory and formulae including but not limited to Binomial Distributions, Poisson Distribution, and the Hypergeometric Distribution. The first item is especially applicable to games in which dice pools play a substantial part (it's very useful knowing the probability that your Space Marines will cause at least 4 wounds out of 10 dice with a 1/3 chance of success per trial).

Joy-sucking mathematician? I wouldn't say so - you seem to enjoy the math! That's definitely a good thing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Hethalos In reply to Valkeus-and-Varya [2015-05-10 23:02:31 +0000 UTC]

It's because many people engage in superstitious rituals to manipulate the outcome of their luck without learning about legitimate, cold probability so they can actually understand their odds in a given scenario. For many people, learning math is painstaking, arduous, and boring, so I am being a slight joy-sucker by suggesting that people learn at the very least hypergeometric distributions and binomial distributions. But seriously; I think a fair number of people well-versed in science or math would facepalm at the sight of a person trying to fix a car by using voodoo magic.
