Well, I sift through alot of crappy shots to get the ones that end up here. I think its more about luck than anything.

Well, I sift through a bunch of crappy drawings to find out what works best for me so you're not alone. .
Anyway, have you considered looking up books or sites on composition? I think it would help you figure out what you want in a picture more efficiently instead of groping in the dark.

As far as studying goes, I haven't given it much consideration. I try toΒ keep my camera on me while I'm out (if actually remember it), and if something catches my attention, either because of the lighting perspective, balance, or something I can't put my finger on, I take a few shots and hope to at least do a little justice to the subject matter. As a rule, its more of a way of commemorating a scene rather than an attempt at art. I would love to do that more effectively, so if there's any material you feel would be particularly beneficial, I'd appreciate it.
