Hi there! I am Brelynne Gunderson, artist of MyBF Illustration.I am so excited that you are here! You and I have a lot in common; a passion for expression through art and a constant need to grow and improve. This is a blessing and a curse. It leads to a constant need to learn new techniques and programs for the betterment of our art.
While this growing process can be frustrating at times, it is also very rewarding, as long as you don’t give up before you reach the tipping point. When it comes to illustrator, I can help you streamline the process. My tutorials and other educational productions make learning illustrator much more simple and to the point.
That is saying something, because I found out the hard way that Illustrator can be a very obnoxious program to learn when you are first starting out. This goes double for artists that use traditional mediums, or even pixel based programs such as Photoshop.
I have personally gone through this process.
As an artist, I started out using traditional mediums, and then moved to Photoshop. During my somewhat brief time in college I took an illustrator class and thought that graphic design work might be for me. So I went out and got a job as a graphic designer for a local vinyl and sign company. For four years I learned what working for a small business was like and what creating vector artwork was really all about. While I was there I fell in love with vector artwork. However, I used a program called Flexi Designer. Flexi is a much more user friendly program, but it lacks the sheer power that Illustrator has.
Illustration has always been my preferred artistic outlet and I knew that flexi just wasn’t going to cut it. So, I became determined to really learn illustrator and find out how to utilize this amazingly powerful tool. Even with a background in vector programs and a class in illustrator, I still found learning the program really frustrating. Yet, I knew that if I didn’t give up on it the rewards would far outweigh the hardships.
Now I can’t imagine creating artwork without Illustrator. I broke through all of the nuances of the program and found simple and easy ways to get beautiful and unique results.
There is no finish line, only the journey.
There have been a few major, inspirational points in my life that have brought me to where I am today amidst the rest of the everything. Since the beginning, I have always wanted to be an artist and bring joy to others through it, this is what started me on my journey.
This need and desire was reaffirmed one day while I was working as a cashier. It was the day that my logo, Mr. Yellow Balloon Face (MyBF) was born: It was a dark and dreary morning, on one of the most excruciatingly boring days at work I had had as a cashier. Balloons floated the halls of this particular establishment and as if by fate, a bright and cheery yellow balloon floated over to the returns desk where I stood. He smiled at me and said, "It looks like you could use something to do". I smiled and pulled out a black sharpie. I drew in his warm happy face for him. He followed me around for the rest of that day helping me greet customers, and spreading his happy bubbly smile. I knew then, that I needed to pursue my artwork harder than ever.
Not long after MyBF was created, I found myself a job as a graphic designer at a local vinyl and sign shop. It was the first time I had worked for a small business aside from the years I “worked” as a freelance illustrator (I say “worked” because I lacked the business skills, at that time, for it to be a real career and source of income). I learned so much about vector artwork as well as business and entrepreneurship. I loved the job, but something still seemed to be missing.
When I became pregnant with my beautiful baby girl, I sat down and thought about what I really wanted in my life and how I could achieve it. I decided that I wanted to do my artwork, not freelance work, but my own artwork. I wanted to be able to be at home with my daughter and husband. I wanted to be able to travel if and when I wanted to. And, most of all I wanted to help people, make them smile, and give them something truly valuable.
So it was decided.
The journey hasn’t been completely smooth, as nothing should be. The bumps along the way are the things that have made me grow and learn. They have brought me and you together here, and I can’t help but think that what I have learned from these “bumps” can be of benefit to you as well.
I publish many free tutorials, time lapse videos, live stream events and other educational productions about illustration and Illustrator. Every day I help artists like you get real and fast results.
