Wow, I really appreciate all those comments! I will definitely keep all of this in mind. I would LOVE to do a children's book.

I'm currently working on a pretty big project, dealing with religion and iconoclasm. As soon as I finish that, I'll start outlining concepts for a childrens' book for sure.

Business major in marketing. How about you? The arts? I should have majored in that.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

napster4every1 In reply to artmagic99 [2006-02-23 05:05:34 +0000 UTC]

I'm currently a freshman in CFA planning on majoring in graphic design. BU has a unique fine arts core program that encompasses two years of drawing, painting, sculpture, and art history; therefore, I won't actually be taking any design courses until junior year, but everyone that I've talked to in the design industry strongly stresses the importance of a fine art background in the graphic design world. In short, a BFA means much more to a company than simply a BA.

That isn't the take I have on it. From what I have experienced being out in the design world, all it takes is a great portfolio + any degree in college you want; just to let them know you went to college and graduated. I put my portfolio together by taking 6 months of night courses at the Corchoran School of Art in Washington DC while I was working at a publishing company in the sales department (although I did occasionally wander and sigh loudly in the art department). You can also get your computer skills anywhere and anytime, but just make sure you get them. I am self taught so I didn't even go to school for that. I think my business schooling was actually invaluable and I hope they are teaching business classes in art schools these days because without those, I have seen many much, much more talented people fail where I have succeeded for 18 years now as a freelancer. If they don't, then maybe some business night courses would be helpful if you end up going to their art school. I definitly missed not being able to be in a creative and passionate clique of colleagues but when I was going to school, only art classes were taught and not practical skills for the real world.

I'll say that you have far more working experience than me, so I must heed your advice. However, what most people fail to realize is that learning Photoshop and Illustrator doesn't mean the end product will be a good design. Of course, many people can learn only the computer programs and succeed brilliantly, but if they don't have any fine art background they won't understand concepts such as composition, perspective, and negative space. I want to learn as much as I can so I am going to elect advertising classes to get a more business sense of how the industry works. As far as I know, no business courses are directly included in the fine art curriculum, but I can most certainly choose the elect them.

Yep, your right about that. Design classes in one form or another are important. You can also learn "on the job" (at an ad agency and come in as a production person initially) or in my case I had a mentor. When I started freelancing I used to bring an experienced designer into some of my tougher jobs and she taught me a lot as we went along. Both of us got paid and benefited because she didn't know how to use computers or the software and she learned from me. Also, just those 6 months of Corchoran got me a working paying portfolio so I must have had design talent and an artistic eye or it would not have got me hired so soon for design work. I really believe good design is both skill and you are born with the talent. Having just one or the other is very difficult when there are so much competition so yes, definitly get in some design courses if you can, get mentored and or get hands on experience with the pros, but a degree to get hired to do design work? You can take it or leave it, just make sure you some how put together an incredible design portfolio.

I meant to say it is good to have a college degree of some kind but it doesn't need to be a BFA to get hired as a designer. All you need, is a really good portfolio (and some kind of college degree!)

I wish you could too because I put so much into the details. I do have a sample of one of my images "Lilly" in my gallery that is blown up so people can take a look at that to get an idea of how much detail is really in my paintings. [link]
