Hi there . Always pleased to see GNU/Linux fellas 'round here! Which distro are you running? I'm using Gentoo.

Yeah, me too! There aren't as many as there should be. I'm running Ubuntu. I was a longtime mac user and used to only use linux in web development. I was a little worried about giving up photoshop for my artwork but it has caused me to be really focus on the content of the work I'm producing and it has forced me to push myself. I've been using Ubuntu and nothing else for over a year now and I've been really happy. Though some things are a little harder, there hasn't been anything that I couldn't do. I doubt I'll ever switch back to mac.

I made the switch too but from Windows and I must admit I totally embraced the philosophy behind free software. I'm not contributing enough to my own opinion but I'll never turn back either. I'm too much addicted to fully controlling my computer .

Yeah, the control and philosophy are really nice. At this point the end product is better too. I now use a mac at work and ubuntu at home. At this point I actually feel more comfortable with my linux. There are big trade offs that come with leaving photoshop behind, though, I don't feel like it's affected the quality of my artwork. If anything, it's had the opposite effect. Since linux is the underdog and it is not viewed as a serious art/photography platform, I feel like I've had to pay extra attention to detail. It's caused me to work harder and actually improve my technical skills (I think).

That is something I find really hard to fight, how GNU/Linux and free software are seen in general. Such preconceptions are tough and that's probably the biggest challenge that has to be dealt with.
I personally find the pre-made idea of a "professional" software quite overrated. People don't realize a "professional" software is in fact nothing but a software that professionals use regardless of any other considerations, which can in truly be virtually anything. They use to pay for what they have and tend to consider this a de-facto standard. Ah, shortcuts!
I'd rather trust a software that was made by the hands of a person who perfectly knows what he needs than a collection of bits and bugs from a commercial company that, each year, comes to me pretending to know better than me what suits my most secret desires...
Humans are really weird animals...

I have issue with the term "professional" in general. People in this city (Chicago) use the word in such a shallow and judgmental way. When applied to art it's a good way to pass judgment without actually saying anything at all about the piece. Of course, like you say, when the word is applied to software it degenerates even further. I like to think, "content is king". It shouldn't matter what tools an artist uses. What matters is the end result. People who feel like they must use a certain program and could never do it on "less professional" tools, have low confidence in their ideas and technical skills.
I've found that in web development, open source tools are generally better accepted and in some cases the "professional" tools aren't trusted. I mean, if somebody asked me to build them a website with Sharepoint I would just laugh at them and honestly, the places where I've worked would just refuse the business.
