so i got into a lot of great schools last year, but i didn't go to any of them because they weren't giving me the financial deal I needed. This fall I am going to Illinois State University for my MFA in painting/drawing. It is a 3 year program, & I am pretty excited for it. I also have an opening this Friday, June 27th for an exhibit i am involved in called Sugarcraft (more info at www.sugarcraftproject.com)

There is an abundant amount of importance placed on beauty in our society and culture, and it often overshadows real women and important issues. A woman’s worth is based on her face and body, and not her mind, abilities, or who she is as a person. A woman may feel like a failure if she is not beautiful. "Even if she is (beautiful), she cannot be beautiful enough," according to Germaine Greer. Although this emphasis on beauty varies from culture to culture, and has existed for ages, it seems like our unhealthy obsession with it has become more of an epidemic because of the media driven world we live in.
Most advertisements limit views of women’s lives and capabilities by portraying them as sexual objects or housewives, but women are multifaceted and have more than just these two roles that may define them. Although some women would like to be seen as sexual objects, ads have a negative impact on women in general by showing these unrealistic ideals of beauty. These images make regular women feel insecure about themselves, like they have something they need to improve. So, we buy into these products and fashions, and even go to drastic measures like surgeries and may develop disorders. According to Germaine Greer, "As a way of inducing them to buy products...women have been deliberately infected with Body Dysmorphic Disorder." We have all been programmed by these images as to what beauty is, even from when we were young girls, playing with Barbies and paper dolls.
I want my work to point out some of these things by exploring the roles of women in media and culture. I believe the tactics used in many ads are so absurd that it can be humorous and I want to expose that. I want to exaggerate the negative way that women are portrayed, and also show them in a positive light; that they can be more than the objects they are in ads. The repetitiveness of ad images we see makes us get used to them, like they are a pattern. So, I have been using pattern and fabric along with painting, sewing, and ironing, in my work because of its relation to fashion and domesticity. I also use pin-up imagery in my work because it was originally used in advertisements, shows some of the ridiculousness that exists in ads today, and still has a certain visual appeal.

here is my artists statement, I didn't know where else to put it:

My current work is mainly about the roles of women, particularly in advertising. I wanted to explore some of the roles that women have, positive and negative, and one way that I have been doing that is through the theme β€œsex sells.” I think that using female sexuality is an interesting and delicate topic because it can be used to objectify women and it can also be empowering. I am incorporating pin-up and advertising imagery from the 1940’s, texture and pattern, and collage in some of my works. I am doing many works on things like shower curtains and tablecloths that I have stretched onto stretcher bars. I think that these materials are useful because they are more interesting than traditional canvas, and they lend themselves to the work because they are used in the domestic setting of the home. The work that I have been doing developed from an interest in body image and cosmetics, because there is such an emphasis on beauty in our society. I have done work in many different mediums, but the area that I would like to concentrate on is painting, although I do think it would be interesting to combine printmaking, digital art, and or sculpture with my work.
I also have a section of digital art that is mainly comprised of self portraits. I was interested in using color, texture, and emotion in these images.
